Man(l)y Lessons Learned

Literal definition:

[see-zuh n]

A period of the year characterized by particular conditions of weather, temperatures, etc.

Meg definition:

A period of your life characterized by particular decisions and life changing events that result in lessons learned.

OKAY, now that you all know what the word “season” means (as if you didn’t know it before) and what it means to me…lets get this party started!

This summer has been one for the books…it was so good that I should literally write a book about it.

As you all know, on June 13th, I turned twenty-and-a half. It was a huge turning point in my summer.

Pre 20.5 recap:

My boyfriend of four years broke up with me and my dog died. YES, that is right…those two things happened on the same day.

So, of course, as the dramatic human being that I am…I was moping, crying, and feeling very, very sorry for myself. I spent a lot of nights with Patrick Swayze and a bowl (or case) of ice cream.

Honestly, I used depression as an excuse for Patrick Swayze and ice cream, but no one needs an excuse for those things. Ever.

Summer is supposed to be all fun and games and sunny and bright, so I put my big girl panties on and found the light in the darkness.

A few short days after I turned the big 20.5, I joined a kickball team and made a very appealing guy…man…guy-man friend. We will call him Manly…I guess you could call me Laura Ingalls!

Those of you who know me personally are probably still a little shaken up on the fact that I joined a kickball team…it is okay to laugh out loud. I was the girl with pigtails and bubblegum (note to self: blowing bubbles in pictures is not cute).

ANYWAY, Manly was something else…fun, funny, adventurous, and H. O. T.

He even took me on a trip to San Francisco! From riding bikes across the Golden Gate Bridge to strolling through the Napa Valley Vineyards to making a shameful amount of trips to Ghirardelli Square…it was pure bliss.

Now, some of you are probably thinking that this ends as a love story…two people traveling, laughing, and falling in love. I will be honest; a part of me was hoping that my summer would end in that way. That would have been a great Nicholas Sparks movie!

Oddly, what I got out of this summer is even better. Not only did I get a summer full of fun, laughter, distractions, spontaneous vacations, and new friends…I also got a season of transformation. I learned one of the most important lessons of all time: I do not need a man, material things, or a large number of friends to make me happy.

(Don’t get me wrong; those things are wonderful, but not needed.)

We tend to tell ourselves that if we just had this one thing, or this one person we would be happy. Then we get that one person and we find something or someone else that we “need” in order to be happy. Or maybe at one point you had it and you weren’t happy with it then…so what makes you think you will be happy with it now?

It is an endless and vicious cycle.

Maybe you don’t struggle with this, but I know that I do. I have decided to break this cycle by becoming aware of what I really need in life. I have actually started practicing what I am always preaching…happiness.

I learned that I need peace within myself as well as confidence that everything will always workout…because it will.

I am so grateful for this passed season that I don’t even know what to do with myself. I am also excited that this season is coming to an end and a new one is about to begin.

Manly, thank you for a summer to remember and never failing to make me laugh. You are the man!

God, thank you for using this season to teach me new lessons. You are the bigger Man!

Summer has come to an end, school has begun, and autumn is falling into place…

Remember my friends; the best is always, ALWAYS yet to come! Let’s make this coming season one to remember!

Be grateful. Be generous. Be giddy.
