Preparing For Living

No matter who you are, there is something in your life that you are really good at.  Trouble is, sometimes we don't have an idea of what to call it or where it fits into mainstream society.  When we look at our nitch from that perspective, life can be very limiting and at times, the thought can be debilitating!  No one wants to feel that feeling of hopelessness and utter abyss.  We are all unique, creative, amazing, wonderful, beings, but we don't always acknowledge just how great we all are.  No one really wants to believe that they are nothing and no body and no one should!

Van Gogh, the world renowned/epic artist, who is recognized as one of the greats in history, was a depressed, unhappy man.  He never sold a piece of art in the whole of his lifespan and yet museums covet his work and I hear many people say, "Wow!  What an amazing artist!"  Who wants to wait til they die for recognition though...the answer would be no one...just in case you hadn't already made the same conclusion.

Often times in life there is a lot of confusion as to, what would be a successful career path in America.  We don't connect the dots for many of our youth...they just hear the end result...such as 'hey, Van Gogh is famous!' What I mean by this is they hear, "You will be successful if you are a ___________," while we don't explain to them, "This is how you get there."  I think even grown ups look at these same issues at times.  We constantly say what we want but don't see the in between, what it takes to get there; the schooling, degrees, research, dedication, fortitude, and sacrifice that comes to follow a dream.

I am a recently self-published children's book author and all of my life I would say, "I am going to be a writer."  Even though I said it though, doing it was a whole other thing.  There was a disconnect between the idea of being the author and the money, time, and energy that it would take to do such a career.  But at the same time, after finding out the expectations, I am still very passionate about being a children's book writer, sharing my voice with the world, helping to advocate for diversity, multiculturalism, cross-cultural connection, and being able to share different ethnicities, heritage, and culture with the world of youth out there.  In hindsight I wish someone would have taken the time to walk me through the steps it would take when I was younger, but am still grateful to have learned at this time.

So, when talking about preparing for living, there is an important component that is missing for many.  It's the steps, the plan, the knowing of expectations, and the connection between what we are currently doing, and what we would like to do.  I remember sitting down one day feeling kind of helpless, wondering what the world had in store for me and my mother came to me telling me to write out what it was that I wanted.  This is something I highly recommend for anyone in any field.  Ask yourself, "What is my dream or what is it that I love to do?"  From there look at careers that encompass those components, then look at people who are in that career doing the work and see how they got there.  Was it a college degree, grants, practice, knowing the right people, having the right people fall into their laps or was there more that was needed?  I know even this can seem overwhelming but once it is done, you will see that because you are now intentional about what you want, doors will open. I know for me that is what has happened and I am working on book number two and book number three, along with everything else.

Leave the doors of life open.  You never know what or who will walk through or what doors may be beckoning you!  Take your first step in preparing for the world and living in it!
