Have you ever walked in the kitchen or any other room and forgot what you went there for? Well it has happen to me many times. We have so many thoughts in our head that sometimes the last one we had is the first one to go. Then when you turn around and walk back to where you were you remember. Your short term memory is just that short term, these are usually things like I mentioned above or can be something someone told you they wanted you to bring them or do. Sometimes you can remember the whole thing but you may forget part of it.
There are times when someone just told you something and then asked you to repeat it and you can’t remember, well part of not remembering what you were just told has to do with your interest in what the person is saying, the other part is if you were just thinking if something else while they were talking to you. It could be a combination of both. This type of forgetfulness happens to everyone at some point in their lives no matter how old you are. Now I suppose you are wondering if I have a solution to this problem, well I can tell you what works for me.
These are very simple things and sometimes they work and sometimes I still forget because I forget to do these things. When I walk away to go get something or do something I try not to let anything or anyone distract me, I try to stay focused on what I am going to get or what I am going to do. This works if you are alone very well, because when someone calls your attention you are likely to forget what you were going to get or do.
Now on to the other type of forgetfulness, this may be harder to do depending on the situation. When someone is talking to you they are hoping you are listening and if it is important to them they may ask you to repeat what they told you to make sure you were listening and that you understand what they told you. It is very important to remain focused no matter how much you may not care. Look in their eyes, pay attention, now whether or not you keep it is for you to decide, it may not really be that important to you. But if the person telling you is your spouse, parent, or boss, they expect you to listen and remember what they are telling you.
As for the part about what you were supposed to bring, well write it down, how ever you choose if you know you won’t be able to remember. Just always make sure that you understand it is normal to forget things, we all do. But you should put something in place to better aide you in remembering to cut down on your own frustration with yourself and others getting frustrated with you. You can remember anything you just have to help your mind keep it there if only for a short while.
