Color Connection: RED

There is something about using the color red for interior design that makes many of us cringe at the very thought of it. Why is that? I understand that and would like to see if I can nudge you just a little to consider putting some red in your life and your home.

To many of us, red represents the color of risk and excitement. We typically think those who like that color are people who “live on the edge” and are not at all like us. Most people don't realize it, but those who are drawn to true red (the pure hue with no added undertones) have some characteristics in common.

They tend to be very practical people who are on the conservative side in terms of their values and work ethics. They also tend to be driven towards results. People who love red are often hard workers who like to be in control of their environment. They often have a natural tendency towards leadership and know exactly what they want to achieve. That describes most of us and yet we resist using red. I am here to tell you that it can have a place in our lives and home interiors.

Our brains function very well in the presence of the color red. Adding it to your interiors and your life can help you in a number of ways. Red will help you to be more direct and to speak up when you need to. It will also help you to be more practical and in control. It is the color of power and confidence. That is a good thing. Best of all, being exposed to red will cause you to embrace change and even initiate it, since red is a very directive color.

Start with small additions of red for your home décor - red candles, throw pillows, flowers in a vase or on a wreath - you get the idea. How about painting the back wall of a shelf unit red? Or maybe you have an accent wall in one of your rooms that you could paint red. A bowl of apples and a vase of red roses are true representatives of nature’s red tones. Let them take center stage on a table in your home.

I promise that you will like red if you just give it a chance. The warmth and richness of the color will appeal to everyone.
