Ah, the end of the day and you are home from work and looking for some entertainment or a nice chat with one of your friends on Facebook. You fire up the laptop or iPad and login to Facebook. But, wait a minute! There’s a message saying it is now banned and you can’t access Facebook in Vietnam anymore!

So, if you want access Facebook in Vietnam it’s not going to work unless you sign up for service with a virtual private network or VPN. Ever since the Vietnamese government starting blocking Facebook (along with some other western social networking, video blogging, and micro blogging sites), you can only get on Facebook with IP addresses in other countries like the U.S. or U.K. A VPN is how you get these temporarly IP addresses.

Virtual Private Networks

If you want to access Facebook in Vietnam, then you need to get that US or UK IP address through one of many VPN service providers available such as Astrill, 12vpn or StrongVPN. Any of these, or a few others, will work. A VPN provides security and safety because you are going through a known entity instead of some overseas server that may or may not be as secure as you are used to. When you sign up for services from one of the various VPN providers online, you get a private virtual connection between your computer and their computer at their server. This allows your computer to register an IP address from the States or other location and allows you to access Facebook in Vietnam.

A VPN is a direct line to that provider’s servers and gives you a static, US or UK or other country's IP address so you essentially are logging onto the Internet from a connection located. Therefore you will be able to access Facebook in Vietnam through a subscription to them. The connection is secure, private and encrypted and the VPN company has protocols in place to protect their clients. On top of giving you the ability to access Facebook in Vietnam it also gives you the added security that gives you peace of mind when you are traveling anywhere in the world.

VPN protocols

It sounds confusing as first, but if you follow these simple rules, you don't have to worry too much about the details. If you want to access blocked sites on iPad, iPhone, Android and other mobile devices, in general you need PPTP or L2TP VPN. PPTP is cheaper, but less secure. L2TP is more advanced and may be more expensive with some services (though not all). For Mac, Windows, Linux and other laptop or desktop operating systems, you need what's called SSL/OpenVPN. There are other VPN protocls available, but SSL/OpenVPN is the standard, and by far the most secure. Symbian devices may need need a bit extra software (specifically Nokia phones - which can be downloaded from the Nokia sites), and a VPN called IKEv2.

Whatever the reason that Vietnam and other countries seem to be blocking social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter, you can still get through by signing up for a VPN. They aren’t free, but most cost around $10 or so a month and that’s a small price to pay to talk to your friends and access Facebook in Vietnam.
