Egypt, Twitter, And How It Affects Your Vpn In China

I'll admit that I don't know much about what happened in Egypt with the "Twitter Revolution". But I do know that it's caught the attention of the Chinese government and they've accordingly stepped up internet restrictions. This has affected many vpn companies and users of their vpn's in China.

In recent weeks the internet in China seems to have gotten smaller by just a bit. As a frequent user of a vpn in China, I've been receiving Tweets every couple of hours updating followers. It started as with the initial Facebook block, and the problems with Google just last year. Sites slowed down and eventually slumped to occasional blocks. Then the permanent block set in. As of the writing of this article, three of the largest companies proving vpn's in China are still down.

So what has this got to do with Egypt and the Twitter Revolution? Although the most popular social bookmarking and micro-blogging sites like Facebook and Twitter are already blocked, access to a vpn in China allows users to tunnel the Chinese Firewall and gain access. Usually, this goes unnoticed or at least unchecked by the Chinese government, but with recent unrest and political change in Egypt and the role the internet has played in the situation, China's beefing up restrictions most likely in hope of preventing something similar.

While the average Chinese citizen doesn't own a vpn and has probably never heard of one, the presence of the West here becomes greater every year. Also, with the modernization of cities and the desire to learn English and communicate with Westerners, young Chinese from larger cities are beginning to seek out ways to tunnel The Great Firewall and see what's happening outside. As companies providing vpn's in China continue to make their service more accessible to Chinese citizens and prices drop, so does the curiosity and willingness to sign up and see what all the fuss is about.

Personally, I think China's making a mountain out of molehill. Your average Chinese citizen is too busy playing QQ (Chinese email, chat, and blog company) to care about Facebook and twitter. They love their country and are not interested in revolution because the Chinese government is doing a lot of good (or at least does a good job of convincing them that they do). Furthermore, their decision to block vpn's in China may work to spark unrest in those modern, educated, young Chinese. I say just give Facebook to the privileged few who want it, and worry about the masses.

UnblockFacebookInChina.info has up to date information, news, and tips about the vpn in China situation. If you're here in the Middle Kingdom or planning to come, you'll probably want to consider getting a vpn in China before the good ones are blocked!
