Facebook Banned In Vietnam

Since 2009 Facebook has been banned in Vietnam. The ban has not always been strictly enforced, but much like China, the general direction of Vietnam is to try and get control over the flow of information in and out (as well as within) of Vietnam. Ways to access Facebook in Vietnam have changed over the years. Here's what's going on.

Much like China, Facebook banned in Vietnam didn't come as a surprise, but no one was really sure what was going on when it happened. Everyone knows that communist government like control and hate criticism - which is what Facebook is notorious for. The ban was not a surprise. But when it happened, there was no official announcement. Suddenly, everyone couldn't access Facebook in Vietnam, and everyone thought to themselves, "Hm, the Internet must be slow today." or, "I wonder if I've got another virus in my computer", or "What's wrong with Facebook today?"

It wasn't until we got together with our friends that we slowly began to realize that Facebook was banned in all of Vietnam.

Vietnam does block other sites, but to be honest, most of them don't really concern me. Most of the banned sites in Vietnam are in Vietnamese, and concerning things like Human Rights, criticism of the government, or religious stuff. I don't mean to sound apathetic, but this stuff doesn't really concern me. I just want to access my Facebook account and see what my friend are doing back home. I know that some countries are starting to use Facebook and Twitter as tools for political change (ie Egypt and China), but for me, its just a way to keep in touch with family back in The US and friends I've met when I travel.

Will Vietnam lift the ban? I seriously doubt Facebook banned in Vietnam is going to be any different even a year or two down the road. Vietnam is definitely following in China's footsteps as far as Internet policies go, and you can only expect more blocked sites in Vietnam's future - not less.

As for how to access Facebook in Vietnam, you're going to need a VPN connection. VPNs not only encrypt your information to keep your data private from your Vietnamese ISP, they also change your IP address making you impossible to trace, and impossible to block. In countries that censor the Internet like Saudi Arabia, China, and Russia, VPNs are the most secure, and therefore most popular way to unblock sites. With a VPN, you haven't got to worry about Facebook banned in Vietnam because after connecting to the VPN server, you can browse the Internet as you normally would in your home country.
