Gadhafi Killed: Now Libyas Official Rebuilding Can Start

Mahmoud Jibril, Libya's Transitional Prime Minister announced the death of fugitive leader, Moammar Gadhafi to the jubiliation of the people in the streets who reacted with car horns, shouting and random gun fire. Also killed were one of the deposed leader's sons, Motassim, his Chief of Intelligence, Adbullah al-Senussi. Former Defense Minister, General Abu Baker Younes also perished.

Gadhafi was apparently traveling in a convoy that was making its way out of his hometown of Sirte, one of the remaining hotbeds of ferocious fighting between transitional fighters and loyal hold outs when French warplanes and a US drone forced it to stop. Rebels on the ground closed in and arrested the leader who is reported to have had a gun in his possession but did not resist his captors.

As he was being loaded into the truck after his arrest, a gun battle broke out with loyalists possibly trying to help the leader escape. During that firefight, Gadhafi was shot once in the right arm and then loaded into the truck for transport to a hospital in Misrata. However, shooting continued and Gadhafi was shot again, this time in the head. According to the rebels who were in the truck with him, he died just minutes before their arrival at that hospital. The coroner confirmed that it was a fatal head wound that killed him. DNA samples were taken to confirm his identity and that evidence was presented to the International Criminal Court. Arrest warrants had been issued by that body for Gadhafi, his sons and several key officials in the old regime. The ICC has agreed that Gadhafi's body can be buried.

Ali Aujali, the Libyan ambassador to the United States confirmed reports that the man who has been the subject for some intense searching in recent weeks had been found in a three foot wide drainage pipe. The entrance to that pipe is now marked with painted phrases that include " place of rat Gadhafi" and "you scum".

Most of the international community had hoped that Gadhafi would be taken alive so that he could stand trial for a litany of crimes against humanity, as did the National Transitional Council fighters that had attempted to arrest him. On several of the videos that have been released of the event, voices can be heard saying "no, we need him alive" and trying to get him into the truck and away from the action. Those videos, many of grainy, poor quality have been released around the world, one showing the leader wounded but still alive and a second which shows him after his death.
