Precious Memories

Over one year ago a tragic devastating earthquake and tsunami hit the Northern coast of Japan. This unstoppable force of nature wiped out entire cities, small villages, farms, trees, and devastated all the lives of everyone on the island.

This awful natural disaster left 15,000 people confirmed dead and 9,000 wounded. Not one family in the country was left untouched by sorrow. All people who survived are resilient. Each of them still remembers their kindred dead.

Everyone in Japan is working to rebuild. There are efforts to rebuild: houses, buildings, roads, villages, farms, and replant trees. There are seven special cities workers who are safeguarding precious memories.

These special workers comb through rubble from destroyed homes to find photographs.A photo of families, family gatherings, sports teams, and any of photos of the citizens of Japan is precious. Once the workers recover the photos, they are kept in a freezer and cleaned with water.

Once restored, workers arrange these photos in scrapbooks. They are also put in windows in the city building. As members of the public pass by and see pictures that belong to them, they are able to enter the city building. If these photos belong to them they are able to recover their precious memories.

For anyone who has survived a disaster, they know that there are certain things that are replaceable. All those who survived are grateful to have survived and know that they can rebuild their home. Furniture, jobs, homes are all replaceable. Photos are among things that cannot be replaced.

For each person that can rediscover a lost photograph of their past, there are able to have a tangible memory of their loved ones. These precious memories become even dearer when the pictures contain images of those who died in the disaster. These photos become a wonderful piece of their kindred dead.

These wonderful city workers are rebuilding lives and preserving memories. They are mending lives. Saving hearts and helping to start the healthy process for those who have lost someone. For so many of the Japanese people on the northern coast this work is priceless.

My heart goes out to all those who have lost someone in Japan. When I first heard this story on March 9, 2012 on the CBS Morning News, the story touched me deeply. I even cried. I am so proud of those seven workers. They are recovering photos and preserving memories.

Street Talk

I really appreciate your article, Merrily. Several years back daughter worked inland (West) of where the Tsunami hit. I actually landed at the Fukushima Airport when I went to see her; the kindness shown my daughter there was incredible! My heart also goes out to those who have gone through so much.
