Syrian Forces Strike Back at Protesters, Monitors Witness Brutality Firsthand

Arab League monitors are in Syria, sent there to observe some of the reported violence against the thousands of protesters in various locations in the country. President Bassar al-Assad has repeatedly claimed that the only violence in Syria has been directed at the Syrian security forces, perpetrated by foreign backed thugs and criminals whose goal is to destabilize the government. He also has claimed that more members of the security forces are killed than any so called protesters.

In the city of Homs, five members of those security forces were killed, according to a human rights group that is there to see conditions first hand. In contrast, however, those same security forces killed at least thirty protesters or more in various locations around Syria, some in full view of the observers. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a group based in Britain, acknowledged deaths on both sides, including the five security force members that were killed.

Assad has signed a plan devised by the Arab League which is meant to ensure that both troops and heavy weapons are removed from a number of different locations around Syria, including the besieged city of Homs. According to unverified reports, snipers are positioned on top of various buildings in and around that city, keeping residents in fear for their lives.

Demonstrators, desperate to make sure that the Arab League observers are actually seeing their numbers, threw rocks and taunted security forces in the city of Douma, one of the suburban areas of Damascus. The crowds there were tear gassed by security forces after they refused to disperse.

Shootings are common, according to a spokesman for the protesters but other weapons are being used, possibly in an effort to disguise the attacks or dismiss them as acts of armed criminals as Assad keeps claiming. One man showed his leg, severely wounded, to the observers, saying that it was a nail bomb used by the security forces.

The protesters told the observers that they were working toward getting to a scheduled sit in protest at the city of Id Lib but were stopped from getting there by tear gas attacks and the threat of more shooting. Security forces reportedly fired rounds directly into the gathering crowd, driving them back and forcing them to break apart.

Syria has been condemned by various human rights groups for its violent crackdown on demonstrators in the country. Over 5000 people have reportedly died there since the uprising started in March of this year.

Here we go again. I've lived my whole life or most of it witnessing this type of nonsense. In the end, nobody cares, except of course if it somehow impedes on your wants.
