It all began at an oil refinery

I never forget the long walks that my father and I used to take while growing up in the oil city of Abadan in Iran. Abadan had a very welcoming and friendly atmosphere but my father's talks were anything but welcoming and friendly. Don't take me wrong. He was a pleasant man and he liked friends and sometimes even total strangers. But deep within his heart, he despised where he lived and where he worked. He did not like where he worked because he believed that he was working for an oil company that was unfair and the refinery was unfair because it was not an Iranian-run refinery. It was an American-run refinery. American upper management. American supervisors. and American system. Yes! In my father's world, he was a foreigner within his own country.

This was the very root of his anger towards those who were running the show at work. The Americans and their servants, the Iranian managers who had surrendered themselves to the Americans and their rules and the ways of running the show. The scenery was not much different from the time of the Egyptians and their slaves who helped them build the pyramids. Little I knew then that my father's hatred for foreigners occupying his country was the very foundation in which one can become an activist, a revolutionary, a martyr or even a terrorist with those thoughts and ideas. Yes, the very thought and notion of the fact that one's space is being occupied by an invading force is the very root on which the ideals of hatred, animosity and eventually desperation that leads to an act of terror is built on.

In the mind of all terrorists, there is a feeling of aggression that comes from isolation and being unimportant enough to be heard. Unimportant to the point where one feels that his or her rights as a human being are being violated and he or she is unable to reverse this course of action of injustice. In the terrorist's mind committing the act of terror is necessary to derail the act of oppression and turn it in a direction of his favor. It is important to point out also that not all people whose rights have been violated become terrorists. Many people whose rights or space become violated choose a different path to change their living environment such as political activism, journalism, politics. Etc. But in the mind of a terrorist, all methods of nonviolence have been fruitless and the only way left is the act of terror itself. Of course in the case of my father and I, neither one of us turned out to be terrorist. Instead both of us used a more passive way of submission and acceptance.

But the very feeling and emotion of being invaded and violated consumed every inch of my father until his last breath and it is still with me.Now the feelings that my father had while working for a foreign infested Iranian oil industry does not compare to the aggressions that are felt by so many others throughout the world every day but the concept is the same. All points out to an aggressor and a subject of aggression who out of desperation takes drastic measures (creating terror) to get attention and change a policy or an idealism of a government or an individual.
