For iPad owners in Canada it's now possible to watch Hulu in Canada on iPad. You need to be a bit tricky about it of course, Hulu has not launched Hulu Canada or any specially applications that make this possible. When I went to Canada last week I was disappointed to find out that I wasn't able to get Hulu TV shows on my iPad there. I also found out that it's not just Canada, but everywhere in the world except American that's not allowed to stream video from Hulu's site. Here's how I got around it.
There's something you can download called a virtual private network. You don't actually download the network, but you download an app that allows you to connect to the network. This is more commonly called a VPN, for short. A VPN is key to being able to watch Hulu in Canada on iPad.
There are many VPN companies out there, and which one you choose will depend on your personal taste. There are a things however, you need to remember that are specific to iPad users. The main one is that you need a L2TP VPN. PPTP and SSL VPN's are also possible to use but they come with some disadvantages when compared to the L2TP protocol.
PPTP was the first kind of VPN protocol. It is simpler in structure, simpler to set up, and in some cases may give you a faster connection because of this. However, it is less secure and therefore more susceptible to being seen by Hulu. It is also more likely to drop the connection which will make your video stop and you'll have to reload. SSL is normally not available for mobile devices, especially iPad in this case. Apple is notorious for not allowing users to access the code of their products, and iPad was not build to use SSL.
If you want to watch Hulu in Canada on iPad with an SSL VPN, you're going to have to jailbreak your iPad. Some say that jailbreaking is perfectly safe, and others say not. My reasoning is that although the L2TP protocol is not as secure as SSL, do you really want to risk voiding your warranty for only a slight upgrade? For 99% of iPad users, and especially for those that are just looking to get Hulu in Canada, and L2TP VPN is sufficient. There's no need to go overboard.
Many VPN services openly advertise that you can watch Hulu in Canada on you iPad through their VPN service, so if you run into any trouble you can contact their support team. This is not a "hack" or "crack". This will not void your iPad warranty.
Installation can be completed in a few step, usually just involving typing the username and password into your iPad in the General > Settings > VPN area. Once installed, you can connect to the VPN. When you are choosing a VPN service, it's important that you get sign up for a service with VPN server locations in The USA. One location will suffice, but more locations and free server hopping is a bonus.
Once connected to the VPN, you are now ready to watch Hulu in Canada on your iPad. Go to Hulu's URL and choose the TV show you want. If you are still unable to stream video, clear your browser cache and try again. If you are still experiencing problems, switch servers. If you still can't get it, contact the support team of your VPN service, but most of the time you'll be able to start streaming Hulu TV on your first try.
