What Lies In the Future for Access to Facebook In China?

The world is changing, and the Internet has had a huge influence on this China. China, however, is still holding fast to the idea that it can control the Internet, and has shown great effort in the construction, maintenance, and development of The Great Firewall of China. As much as they claim that it's constructed to keep "the bad guys" out, it's pretty obvious that they just want to keep tabs on everyone, and waiting for anyone to step out of line. But will this change in the future?

I think yes. As China develops, if it does ever catch up to The West in terms of material wealth and standard of living, so will the minds of Chinese people China. Much like America and Europe were 100 years ago, China is still a very traditional place. As China develops, these traditional values will be exchanged for more modern values. That's not to say they're good or bad - just different. With the new generation of Chinese having access to the Internet, technology, and money, they're going to want to travel, be creative, and make their voice heard. While past generations didn't worry about things like education, art, and individual desires because they were too busy working for their next meal, this generation is different. With food on their plate, and clothes on their back, kids born in the 90's are going to be chasing something different.

Facebook has developed incredibly quickly in the last couple years, and I don't think anyone though it would become what it has become today. More than just a bunch of college kids sharing photos, it's a business tool, it's some people main form on long distance communication, and it's being used a tool for political change.

Facebook represents the freedom to connect. It's place where you and your friends can discuss things openly. Sure, it's not a philosophy course or an art exhibition, but it's what interests the common person. For now, this is what China fears - common people exchanging ideas. And for the time being, China's still able to control this. However, this control won't last forever.

Maybe it won't be Facebook in China that "starts the revolution", but in the next 10-20 years, it will be something like it - something that allows like-minded people to communicate easily that will be the beginning of the end for the current oppressive regime in China. Ten years down the road when teens start asking "why", we'll see a generation of Chinese hippies fighting for change.
