As an entrepreneur, you may be thinking of the next 'big idea', but the truth is that one valuable resource that anyone and everyone has is a wealth of information we keep in our heads. If you're an expert at...anything...there's probably someone else interested in it too, and you can sell them your expert knowledge with the help of the internets. There a huge network of digital information products websites where virtual entrepreneurs such as yourself can promote their own products, as well as find others to do it for them (affiliates).
How to get started
To get started, first you're going to have to decide what valuable information you have to give. I hesitate to give you examples and taint the 'open space' that is your current state of creative mind, but I will list a few to get you started. Depending on your confidence as cyberpreneur, you may be wondering, "Do I have anything to offer?".
The truth is that everyone does - you just need to think of a way to properly package and promote it. Here are few interesting ones I've seen.
- How to make your own solar panels at home to save energy
- How to start a website
- How to create smartphone apps
- How to learn [language]
- Travel guides and tips
- Troubleshooting guides
...and many more
Remember, you don't have to be the top expert in your field. Know more than most people, and creating a high quality product from that knowledge is a good place to start.
How to package that info
There are a variety of ways to present this information to your customers. The most common form is going to be a PDF ebook. You can make it yourself with some tutorials on the internet, or outsource it to someone on freelancing websites like oDesk or Elance. In fact, you can even get someone to edit and add pictures, meaning you only need to take care of the written part.
Another great way to transfer information from your brain to someone else's is through video. I'll admit, I'm as lazy as they come, and I'd rather watch someone talk on a video than read a wordy explanation. Plus, when it comes to instruction, if a pictures worth a thousand words, then a video's worth a million.
Combining these two formats works well too, meaning you can appeal to both camps. Plus, watching a 50 minute video of an ugly guy talking gets old fast, so if you're particularly camera shy, combining elements of written text, pictures, and video is surely a winning combination.
Selling & Promotion
To actually sell your information product out there you're going to need to find people that want it! Oh yeah, did I mention that you should probably research your potential market before writing this thing?
Plus, you'll need to find a way to deliver it to them automatically.
There are many websites that will actually host your product (ie store it in 'the cloud'), as well as take care of financial transaction for you. Selling digital information products online through a reputable vendor means you get the security and trust of a well known site. Many people distrust private sellers for some obvious reasons. Another advantage of this option is that professional affiliate marketers know these digital information product hubs, and scour them for high quality products to promote on their own websites.
You can also learn to promote your own products by learning internet marketing for yourself. Honestly, if you can spend the time it takes to create your own product, yo can surely invest a bit of time into learning how to reach your audience better.
Knowing a bit of internet marketing can teach how not only how to get more traffic to your website, but also to find targeted customers, create a more user-friendly experience, get better conversions, which translates to more money in your pocket at the end of the day.
