Ranking Well In Google - It\'s Not As Great As You Might Think

I know that there's a lot of hype around SEO and ranking in Google, but there are a number of reasons why ranking well in Google isn't all it's cracked up to be. I used to be obsessed with it, but over time I've discovered the 4 things to be true.

1. Google is not the only search engine people use

Sure, the majority of people use it RIGHT NOW, but there's also Yahoo!, Bing, Opera, and I even get traffic from one called DuckDuckGo. Also, there's nothing to say that things won't change in the future. Putting all your eggs in one basket is never a good thing.

2. Your rank is never permanent

You could have the most relevant, best, most interesting and engaging information out there, but there will always be new competition looking to steal your spot. Plus, Google changes their algorithm frequently, so you could be #1 today, and #5 next month. It's impossible to predict, since changes are not always announced, and ranking metrics are never revealed.

3. There are more ways to get traffic than search engine rankings

Though it can be a great goal to reach that #1 spot for your favorite keyword, other things like guest blogging, PPC, video marketing, and social media can all bring traffic to your website. If you connect with people online and they come to your site because they like you or what you have to say about your industry, these can convert more easily into return visitors, likes, tweets, and shares. It's not just some random Joe Schmoe stumbling upon your site.

4. Focusing on things other than rank can improve your rank

It's like waiting and watching for the kettle to boil. The more you focus on it, the more it won't happen. If you TRY to rank, you're probably going to over optimize. By writing for your target audience and not for Google, people will like your site more. When they like your site more, they will come back and share it with their friends.

By focusing on being active in social media communities to further your own craft instead of just 'self promote', people will see that you are there for the benefit of others, not just for yourself. Trust is hard to gain on the internet, but with trust, comes more shares, more visits, and better ranking.

Hopefully from these examples in point #4, you can see how 'doing' without 'wanting' is probably the best strategy for improving your ranking in Google, even though it's much more tempting to look at SEO metrics as a formula for success.

Conclusion

Ranking well in Google is not a guarantee that you will make money, and it's certainly not the only way to advertise. In fact, there are many alternatives to SEO that may be better as a long term business strategy. Don't put the cart in front of the horse: write for the reader, and the rankings will come. Write for Google, and you may not get any readers!
