Should Someone Who is Unemployed Try to Start A Business?

This is a tough question that I'd like to tackle today, because I have mixed feelings on the subject. As a business owner, I know that there are some typical traps that recently (and unexpectedly) unemployed persons may fall in to. But I also think that this can be the a great opportunity to change the direction of your life, and wake up from the snooze of career-apathy.

Entrepreneurial Traps

Not everyone was cut out to be an entrepreneur. I don't want to sound big-headed, as if I have done something no one else can, but let me explain. Sometimes, being self employed can be a real source of stress.

Your taxes are going to be a more complicated. You're going to have to have a detailed personal as well as business budget. Eventually you're going to need to start hiring people and being responsible for them as well. In the beginning you'll work longer hours than everyone else, and care more about your business than anyone else.

It's certainly not a "nine to five" job where you can leave all your worries behind after 5:00 PM rolls around and look forward to the weekend when all is merry for two whole days.

People tend to look at small business owners and the self employed as 'having it easy' - and in some ways we do - but there are sources of stress and frustration that the average person probably hasn't considered.

But what do you mean by opportunity?

I know, you just lost your monthly income, maybe in a fit of rage as you threw your chair out the window, or maybe in a quite implosion as you realize that you're not going to be able to make the payments on the brand new car you just bought.

No doubt you're feeling the pressure.

But do you really want to put your future in some else's hand again? Do you really want to deal with another grumpy boss?

Oh, right, you probably love waking up at 6:30 in the morning to do a job and get the bills paid.

And who really needs that thing called...wait...what was it called again? Oh yeah, vacation. Two weeks per YEAR is definitely enough.

Being self employed is completely awesome because you make the rules. And being the boss is way better than being the bossed.

Online Business

I mentioned earlier that I own a business. For dramatic effect, I left out the fact that it's an online business.

Internet based businesses are way easier to start up, run, and be profitable from because everything is cheap. You do most of the work for yourself, and the internet runs 24/7, so you don't have to physically be present to make sales.

In fact, every morning when I wake up (some time around 9 or 10 o'clock), I find that there's more money in my account than when I woke up.

Conclusion

There are some similarities and differences between owning a brick and mortar business versus owning an online business. There are advantages and disadvantages as well. One of the main advantages is that you can learn about online business through the internet, meaning you don't have to travel outside your home, and much of the information out there is free.

Though being an internet entrepreneur isn't for everyone, it's at least worth a try. At this point, you should be looking into every available opportunity out there.

So to answer the original question of the article; No, not everyone who is unemployed should start a business. However, it's easier than you think, and learning something new never hurt anyone. You'll never know if you don't try.
