Many people are naturally curious, and they are also eager to share their news with the world. They might want to tell their friends that a family member is expecting a baby or that a friend just got promoted. Therefore, they often turn to Facebook. They update their status, correspond with their friends, and check out the sites of their favorite businesses. The problem, however, is that some people spend the entire day on Facebook. Rather than doing normal activities, such as cleaning their house or going to the gym, they simply spend their time using this social network.

Facebook and other sites such as Twitter, MySpace, and LinkedIn offer users the benefit of allowing them to connect with one another. By making these connections, they are put in contact with people they can turn to later when they need letters of recommendation for a job. However, while the social networks are helpful when it comes to connecting with others, live, physical connections might be best.

First, when you get together with a loved one, you get to see him. The two of you can also talk and listen to each other. Actual conversations are different from typing messages back and forth to each other, because you get to see how your friend reacts when you talk with him. You see his excitement when you tell him that you bought tickets for the two of you to go see a play at the local theatre, for example, and his disappointment over not being hired for his dream job. In addition to spending time with loved ones, there is another reason to go live life, rather than talking about it on Facebook. You get to actually see the places that are out there.

You might go to a new coffee shop, for example, where you will buy and enjoy your favorite coffee. Facebook cannot give you a physical cup of coffee. You cannot smell the great smell of the brew or experience how it warms you up. You must get out of your comfort zone, step away from your computer, and go get it yourself.

Facebook and the other social networks are alive and well. They will not be going anywhere. Go on, and enjoy life. See what great things are out there that you might be missing out on by spending so much time on Facebook. You can get back online later, and when you do, you might be surprised by the great things you see and what you might learn.

Street Talk

A good suggestion, Hollie. And your writing is very engaging. But I can't agree that FB is alive and well—I mean, yeah, people still go there, but the traffic has ebbed considerably. As a shut-in of sorts, I was ecstatic back when I found out that everyone was on MySpace—I went from being completely isolated to being in touch with everyone I'd ever met (give or take). As Facebook came into the spotlight, I was panicked about the sudden vacuum on MySpace—but then I moved to FB, too, and it was even better. Since then I've been very happy with my FB 'life'—but time has passed and many people have come to your very sensible conclusion—it's better to live an actual life. There are still people that get online every day, because it's part of their office routine or because, like me, their travel options are severely limited—but those who enjoyed the novelty of FB, yet have the ability to live in the real world, have begun to limit their postings and sign-ins to a weekly thing—or only on trips. There's also a good percentage of 'FB-was'-es who have gone mobile, on i-Phones and other remote platforms, and stick mostly to Twitter. So, the traffic on FB is noticeably reduced lately. This is bad news for people like me, but not for the rest of you—your point is well taken—a 'real' life is vastly more satisfying! Keep up the great reporting, and thanks.
