In the beginning, Internet Marketing (IM) may seem a bit intimidating. It seems as if it is pretty technical, and that there are a lot of pieces. But underneath it all Internet Marketing is a business.
Internet marketing is like any other business, you buy something at wholesale and sell it at retail. There is one big advantage though, you do not have to actually have to handle the product. You can sell the product on a commission basis, and let the producer of the product handle all of the details. You simply collect a commission.
This is the same model used by sales people for any business. They sell the products for the business and take a commission. The only difference with Internet marketing is that you use the Internet to connect with others instead of shoe leather and gasoline.
The other similarity to business, is that you need a place to sell the goods. In the real world, this is called a store. If you want to sell toys, you set up a toy store in the mall. If you want to sell toys as an Internet business, you need to have the equivalent of a store in cyberspace. This is known as a web page.
Just as you do in the real world, you can either rent or own your store front. On the Internet, you can create web pages on Web 2.0 sites, like Squidoo.com and Hubpages, com. Or, you can create a blog someplace like Blogger.com or Wordpress.com. You do not own the properties, you are allowed to use or rent the space. In both examples, the only rent you pay is not in money, but by abiding by the terms and conditions dictated by the site owner.
The alternative is to purchase hosting and create your own website. Then you can dictate the rules.
The final piece to understand when beginning Internet marketing is traffic. Traffic is the amount of visitors coming to your store. Similar to a brick and mortar store, is that you have to market. You have to drive traffic to your store.
There are several ways (both good and bad) for driving traffic to your site. The best way to learn how to get Internet traffic is by using a reputable training company to teach you the various techniques. Then it is important to use the techniques properly and judiciously.
So, the basics of Internet marketing is to have a product to sell, set up a store front, either as your own hosted website, or create a web page on a Web 2.0 site. Finally, drive traffic to the website.
There are only three pieces, but they can be involved. Training is the fastest way to understand the pieces to beginning Internet marketing.
