What not to do is just as important as what to do. If you can avoid other peoples mistakes and don't do what they did, you will be ahead of the learning curve and not have such a hard road. Knowing what will make an online business fail will make you more knowledgeable and ready to take on the internet world.
First thing, don't jump around
Focus focus focus. To many people want to do to many things at once. Did you know that your brain really can't multitask? Really it can't. All you do when you multitask is jump very quickly from one thing to the other. Look around, people who are really successful focused on one thing, and they do it really well.
Now I am not saying that you can't create more than one website, but start with one and get it really good before you move on to the next. People who fail are the ones who spread themselves out to thin and then they don't do anything really well.
Second thing, your website is just a "promote this product" site
People want answers to their problems. If you can give them those answers, they will be more likely to buy from you. But if you just shove a "buy this product" down their throats while they are trying to find an answer, they will go elsewhere.
You need to provide content for your readers. Not just content but quality content at that. How would you like it if someone you didn't know at say a party, just walked up to you and started talking about the product they have that will help make your hair grow back. (I forget to mention that you are bald for this example).
You probably wouldn't be to impressed because this person didn't even introduce themselves to you either. That is just like it when all you do is try to get peoples money. It shows in person and it will show on your website as well.
Third thing, implementing to many things at once
The key here again is to focus. There are many ways to direct traffic to your site. Press releases, PPC, video marketing, email marketing, banners, etc. Some of these are paid, some you can do for free. But if you try to learn all of them at once, none of them will truly be effective and work for you. Plus the ones that do work you will have a harder time keeping track of because of all of the ones you have going on at the same time.
Focus on one thing, one way of advertising till you get really good at it and are getting some results. Then you can move on to add another way of advertising to your tool box.
Having to many things going on too soon, especially in the beginning, doesn't let you focus on really building your business.

Knowing where to go for quality information is key. Knowing how to get rich online is an art in and of itself. But you can learn it, and be successful online as well!
