A Smart Passive Income Idea: Upselling With Class

The line “You want fries with that?” is usually associated with being a loser or having a dead-end job. But for online marketers, it can also teach a lesson about proper upselling.

Upselling is the technique of convincing a customer that’s it a good idea to spend a little extra. “You want fries with that?” is good upselling because the fries logically compliment the initial purchase. Most people DO order fries with their burgers, and some people order burgers and forget to ask for fries. The question isn’t out of the ordinary, and if the answer is “Yes,” everybody wins – you get exactly what you ordered, and the burger maker earns a little extra money for a few second’s work.

But then there’s bad upselling: the kind that makes the seller look pushy and disrespectful and greedy, and makes the buyer feel insulted and pressured and taken advantage of. “You want a suckling pig with that?” is bad upselling because even if you do like suckling pig, you don’t normally order one with your burger. Upselling shouldn’t make you feel like there’s a pile of suckling pigs in a back room that the seller is under pressure to sell off by any means necessary.

I myself have recently been upsold quite badly and quite well – by the same vendor.

I decided to buy his online marketing product because there was no attempt to dazzle me with visions of fancy cars, big houses, and swelling bank balances. I also liked it that the vendor gave a full explanation of how and why I should expect his product to work. Indeed, he explained it so well that I was a little suspicious about how low the price was. I made the purchase only to find myself on a Web page offering a second piece of software that cost four times more.

Needless to say, I was not amused. But at least I could take comfort in realizing that I was right about it sounding too good to be true: the first piece of software is pretty much useless without the second. However, since the vendor did explain what I would be getting for my money, I bought the extra software because I felt it was worth the price. Then I’m taken to a Web page with a THIRD piece of software – but my reaction to it was completely different.

The software assisted with Web site building – perfect for those who would be doing it themselves for first time, but not for someone like me with a decade of experience. I felt much better about this upsell not because I didn’t have to buy the software, but because though some of his customers could make use of it, the vendor didn't try to make it part of the entire package.

Had the first two pieces of software been offered together with an upsell of the third, it would have made a much more favorable first impression. But in spite of everything, I am very happy to be able to report that the product is indeed working as promised, and I therefore don't regret putting up the extra money.

Now more than ever, building a smart passive income online depends upon creating and maintaining customers with legitimate online marketing techniques. It is now possible to learn these techniques at no cost.
