Be A Webmaster | Building Websites for Local Businesses

A webmaster is someone who builds, manages, and maintains websites for themselves or other people. They ensure that things like plugins, widgets, and links are running smoothly. They are responsible for monitoring comments and replying to them. They control spam. They set up social sharing on their sites and other accounts for social sites such as FaceBook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest for social sharing off the sites. They optimize them, build sitemaps, and analyze their site stats.

When you know how build and optimize websites for others’ businesses, such as for local businesses in your area, you can call yourself a webmaster. You have the expertise necessary to not only build websites but know how to get them noticed by other people and the search engines. Many people do not have the ability to build and manage their websites themselves and welcome the chance to have someone else do the work.

Building websites for local businesses can earn you a nice income whether you want to be a webmaster in your spare time or start your own full-blown webmaster business.

Where to Start

It all starts with finding local businesses that need your services and then building websites for them. It’s easy to find out if they even have a site. If they don’t you can approach them with the idea that there is the potential for a steady stream of new clients once they gain an online presence. Point out that their competition is online. I might even go so far as to show them their competitors sites.

If they do already have a site, find out where it plays out in the local and global rankings. Chances are they are not on the first page. Now you are armed with the fact that you can get them first page rankings over the competition if they use your services.

You also have the advantage of taking on only one client in each field of expertise. You wouldn’t, for instance, take on two plumbers in the same general location. So whichever plumber takes you up on your offer to build them a site and optimize it, gets your service exclusively and can outrank the competition for first page status.

How to Find Local Businesses to Approach

Keep your eyes and ears open when you are out and about. Talk to the person next to you in line at the bank or in a store. Say hi to everyone you meet and strike up a conversation. A good technique to getting businesses to know what you do without giving them a sale-sy pitch is to ask them questions about their business. People love talking about themselves and their work.

“What do you do?” is a perfectly acceptable question to ask. If it’s obvious from a sign on their truck, ask them something you’ve been wondering about that relates (but only if it’s genuine) or how long they have been in business. The conversation will eventually lead to what you do and there you have it - the opportunity to tell them about your local marketing business.

“I build websites for local businesses and get them ranked on the first page of search engines like Google Places.” Say this as you hand them a business card.

It’s an easy transition. Even if the person you are talking to doesn’t take advantage of your services right then and there, they have your card and you will probably be the one they call when they decide to take their business to the next level online.

Have Your Own Local Website

Another thing to remember is that a good example goes a long way. Your business card will have your website on it. You have to have a website since that is the service you are selling. Make sure your site ranks well in local directories and make it appealing. For content, think of a problem a local business may be having that prevents them from gaining an online presence. Then write content on how you would (or can) solve the problem.

An Example...

Let’s say a local bakery that does not have a website online has seen less sales over the past six months. That’s a big problem! Well, the solution would be to build them a site and get them on the first page of the serp’s. You could talk about creating a FaceBook Fanpage, and a Pinterest account and show them how to connect these social accounts to their site. More solutions! And think of all the great pictures they can put on their site to entice people with their creative confections.

What Are They Spending on Advertising Now?

Show them how much further their advertising expense money would go with a website than it does with traditional advertising in say the Yellow Pages which very few people even use anymore -- they are more apt to search for something local online. For the same cost or less, their business can gain a much wider customer base online. Especially if they get you to build an email list of customers and followers.

If you can build a site, you can be a webmaster. Building sites for local businesses can be a nice side income or a lucrative full time business. And once you know how, you have the expertise to take your business anywhere you go.

If you don’t yet know how to build a site and optimize it to rank well, you can learn how with the proper training. It’s easy and a lot of fun along the way.
