Build A Chicken Coop – An Investment In Food Independence

Ever hear the saying don't put all your eggs in one basket? It's just too risky anymore to leave our everyday needs in the hands of others. So many families are struggling these days just to even put food on the table. For many of these families the idea of controlling their own food supply is quite imminent and at this point would even be considered a luxury. But there are ways to do this, and you can do it without spending a fortune.

Deciding to build a chicken coop is an easy starting point to one's move to a more independent lifestyle. Raising chickens can provide a family with an inexpensive and healthier way to eat the food they are already buying in the stores. Chickens can be raised for egg production, poultry meat, or even give a household a means of making a few dollars each month from their investments.

There are some things to consider though before you build a chicken coop. Look over the list carefully to make sure you get this investment off to a great start.

How Big of a Coop

This will depend on what your needs are from raising chickens. On average chickens require anywhere from 3-4 sq feet inside the coop and a perching post. So if your goal is to only buy a handful for the purpose of laying eggs everyday you'll have to multiply how many chickens by 4sq feet to get your total square footage. For 5 chickens you would need 20 square feet.

Where to Locate the Coop

Chickens like the sunshine as much as we do. So if possible build the chicken coop out from under trees. This will also keep the predators from climbing up the tree and dropping in on our investment. The chickens will also need a run of at least 10 feet. So you'll definitely want to plan accordingly.

City Codes

This is a big one, and unfortunately there is no one answer fits all for this. Every city has different zones where they will allow livestock or not. Be sure to check with the officials of your locale before you build a chicken coop. It also probably wouldn't hurt to let the neighbors know what you're intentions are.

Assign The Duties To Family Members

Why not get the whole family involved. Make Johnny and Susie put away the gadgets for a half an hour a day. Raising chickens can be a fantastic learning experience for the children. It can teach them about responsibility, working together as a team, as well as leadership. Not to mention they would be getting a firsthand lesson on independent living, which in my opinion is worth gold.

Chicken Coop Building Plans

If the task of building a chicken coop troubles you any, you'll be happy to know there are companies out there who specialize in building plans. That's right. With designs for virtually any layout, size or color you can think of. This is a great alternative. And this way you will be guided step by step in the building process so won't need to worry about your neighbors critiquing your construction skills.
