Coupons are huge these days!

There's a reason Google tried to buy Groupon for billions of dollars and why Groupon turned them down. It's also why Google has decided to start their own coupon company.

Local businesses spend billions each year on coupon companies like Val-Pak, SavvyShopper, and The Saving Source. These are all companies that mail coupons to local residences in a certain geographical area.

Coupon advertising can be very effective, but it can also be very expensive for local businesses or individuals who do not have a huge advertising budget.

It's not unusual for a half page ad in one of these coupon services to run $300 a month.

So people are always looking for ways to save on these advertising costs.

One of the popular ways to advertise these days is using Facebook advertising.

Facebook is a growing favorite among advertisers because of the growing subscriber base, which now tops over 700 million people. It is expected to top 1 billion people in the next few years. So the potential is huge.

Also, the Facebook Advertising Platform has a variety of demographic data that can be utilized to drill down to a highly targeted customer base.

One can use a Facebook App like Lykdit to create Facebook Fan Gates, and optionally create coupons that customers can print out or bookmark on their smartphone.

Fan Gates are websites that have a superimposed "Like" box on them that ask the visitor to "Like" the box in order to receive a particular offer or coupon and to navigate to the website in question.

For instance, a roofing company might build a Fan Gate that reads "Like us to receive $500 OFF any new roofing job". When the visitor clicks on the "Like" button then they are taken to the coupon. Once they either print the coupon or bookmark it, then they are taken to the business website.

But here's where the real viral power of Facebook comes into play.

When the user clicks on the "Like" box, the link is then posted on their Wall, which means all their Facebook friends see it! If any of their friends see it and then click on the link, they are then taken to the same "Like" box. If they click on it, then the link is also posted on their Wall where all their friends see it, and so on.

The potential here is huge!

Instead of just marketing to just one person at a time, the business could market to thousands.

Also, this type of advertising is a lot less costly than other forms of coupon advertising. And there are no monthly fees or reoccurring charges. The business simply pays for the number of credits they need to create their Fan Gates and coupons. In these tough economic times, any savings that a local business can find are helpful to their bottom line.
