Google Adwords Keyword Tool For Affiliate Article Marketing

When I first started writing articles, I had know idea how to find useful keywords. I simply wrote an article on a specific topic and hoped it would get read.

That's fine if you just want a view or two, but is far from sufficient if you are trying to drive traffic to your website.

Over some time now, I've become familiar enough with Google's Adwords keyword tool to help do free keyword research. Since then, I've watched my articles, website and blog increase in viewer ship. My articles are getting to a more specific audience and are read more by simply being found.

How I approach my free keyword research:

Think of words and/or phrases associated with the niche you intend to promote. I start with a fairly broad term like “skydiving”. I can work them down later into even more specific phrases later on.

Enter those broad terms in the Google Adwords keyword tool. Be sure to check the “exact” box on the center left side of the screen. That way you are getting exact results of what people are putting in the search engine. Click search.

Once I have a list of results, I want to look at low competition keywords. So I click competition in the center top of the results bar twice. The first time will list the high competition keywords first and the second click reverses the order and starts with the low competition keywords first.

I scam the list looking for highly searched keywords, the amount is still up to interpretation as I learn. I just go with a feeling from the list I have in front of me. In the initial stages of narrowing down a keyword, I start looking at words searched for over a thousand times a month, depending on if I'm writing for a website or an article.

Once I find one I like, I left click the term and do a Google search. This will pop up in a second window, so I click over to that tab.

Now I want to check the competition for that word or phrase, so I place “quotations” around the keyword in the search bar and hit enter. This will give me other sites using that specific keyword and I can gauge the competition.

Results for the competition will show just below the search box. If the number is low enough, I'll write it down and continue searching.

Many times the competition of the word can be quite high. Let's say I get a result in the millions. If the search from google adwords keyword tool has enough results to warrant breaking down that keyword, then I'll work it out to a longer phrase.

Something like adding gender or location can be a good start.

If I start with a word like “skydiving”, it can be broken down to “learn skydiving” in the Google search engine to see if there is any competition for that phrase. I open another tab on my browser and open up Google adwords keyword tool to see if anyone has searched for that term. I'll repeat this process until I can build up a long tail keyword phrase I think is enough to justify to write an article. A long tailed keyword is just a phrase that can greatly target a certain reader, like “how to get your ex back for men”.

This process has yielded a number of keywords for my article marketing campaign. I've been able to find words and phrases searched a couple hundred times but only a few pages to compete against.

This process may seem tedious. It is. But I'm learning a lot from it and it's absolutely free, so I can't think of any better reason to keep it up.
