Keyword Research for Your Niche

Your niche marketing business depends on relevant and targeted keywords.

If you want to be found in the search engines then it is necessary to learn what a search engine is actually looking for when someone submits a word or phrase into a search function. You may have some great ideas for an article, blog, or content on your website but if you don't use relevant wording to help the search engines find your pages then your page may never be found and you've just spent valuable time for nothing. In most cases you must stop and do a little keyword research for your niche marketing business before you even begin your marketing campaign. There just isn't any way around it and have any hopes of being found by a search query.

Keyword research for your niche can be broken down into several stages. Here are a few.

1. Don't make assumptions. As a website owner you know all about your product and what your site is about but not necessarily the terms others may use when looking for information on a product or service. What you see as a good search term or phrase may be completely different from what others use in their searches. You may be using terms identifying the technical nature of your industry while others are using more common language. Don't guess. Do some research to see what words others are using wish will also help optimize your documents for search engines and your potential customers.

2. Create a list of several keywords and phrases. Keyword research for your niche market is also necessary to see how competitive the words or phrases are you wish to use are. Keywords or phrases with a high competitive value will make it very difficult to obtain good ranking in the search engines. Find keyword and phrases with low competition will likely get you good page rank and many more visitors to your site. The Google Keywords Tools is one of many places to get ideas for your keywords but in my opinion there are some better.

By entering your keywords and phrases into the tool will show you the activity of that phrase along with other keywords and phrases related to your search. You will be looking for the phrases with low to medium activity. Remember other sites are competing for the same consumers your are. Choosing a highly active keyword will make it very difficult for you to obtain any favorable rankings in searches. On the other hand choosing key phrases with too low activity would be useless as there are not many people using that particular term in the searches.

3. Using your keywords. After some brainstorming and keyword research for your niche you should have a list of several key phrases that give promise for use in your promotions. Choose the one word and phrase that most targets and reflects the theme and subject of the article or blog you wish to create. That phrase will be the main phrase used in the body of your document but you can still use 2 or 3 of the others phrases as long as it doesn't upset the balance of your article.

The body is not the only area to make use of your keywords or phrases. They should also be placed in the title of the document, headings, meta description, and navigation links. This is all a part of optimizing your pages for positive search results.

4. Can search tools skew results? Maybe. Take into consideration the tens of thousands of businesses using the internet. If they are smart they will constantly check on their competition and how they rank in search engines. How? By doing searches in Google and other places using appropriate keywords and phrases. Companies doing SEO for others do the same thing. Possibly millions of affiliate marketers are doing the same also. These are not consumers looking for information on a product but it all counts as "activity" when using a keyword research tool for your niche.

One last thought when doing keyword research for your niche market. Google itself personalizes search results based on your search and browsing history. It also may give results based on the cookies stored on your computer even with the personalization features turned off. Keyword tools offer a great resource that do help the affiliate marketer but there are times you just have to use your own personal judgment when deciding which words to use.
