Craigslist can be a great way to advertise any products you are promoting without costing you a cent, as long as you utilize it correctly. However, like most things marketing on Craigslist does have its pros and cons.
The Good
- It is free to post-as long as you don't post in any of the major cities U.S listed on Craigslist (Denver, New York, Los Angeles, Detroit, etc.) you can post all of your ads at no cost to you.
- Easy to use-if you know how to type, have an e-mail address and can upload pictures you'll have no problem using Craigslist.
- Have a broad audience-since Craigslist offers such a wide variety of products and services on its site nearly anyone of any age, race and background frequently visits the site. As long as what you are promoting is real and legit, you will have no problem making sales.
- No effort needed-it takes minimal to no effort to grow a business on Craigslist. It really is as simple as it sounds.
- Potential to run an internet based business-you really do not need to do anything else for an internet business. You have an unlimited amount of traffic coming to you and as long as you can e-mail people who reply to your ads you can easily make a comfortable living on Craigslist
The Bad
- Limited amount of people seeing your ads-while Craigslist is used by millions of people nationwide your ads will only be seen by a small percentage of that. This is because Craigslist has put restrictions on where you can post based on your IP address. This means you can only post in your local area and to maybe the next state over. If you do you risk being flagged or potentially banned by Craigslist.
- Flagging-This can be a pain in the butt. You can be flagged for pretty much anything and can be flagged by anyone. The way to prevent this is to not post anything that looks like spam or is a scam. If you have too many ads that get flagged within a short amount of time, your account with Craigslist could get blocked and there is no other way to create another account using the same IP address. You would have to get a new one.
Now that you know both the good and the bad of marketing on Craigslist you can see if this method of marketing will work for you. Considering that using this site as free advertising you have nothing to lose. You can only gain.
So how would you make a ad that doesn't look like a scam?
Simple! Say you want to promote a product such as an an employment opportunity, you would write your ad as if you were an employer that was hiring for a certain position. Just make it sound convincing but do not promise to make them a ton of money. Be realistic with them and sales will follow :-)
