Needs And Wants

Do your target customers need or want your product or service?

Buying habits vary from person to person but there is one thing in common with everyone. The things you and I purchased can be divided into two main categories. The things we want, and the things we need. We can convince ourselves in one way or another that a purchase is something we really need, but to be honest it's likely something we just really wanted.

You're driving down the road and notice your fuel is pegging on empty and still got a couple hundred miles to go. Your not going to make it. You definitely need gas. On the other hand your car is a few years old, paid for, and in perfect running condition. Do you need a new car? Probably not but you've seen all those nice new models others are driving around and yep, you likely want one of them.

Emotions and feelings play a big part in our buying habits. Ever gone to the grocery store when you are really hungry? It's highly likely your grocery bill is somewhat higher than if you had gone there on a full stomach. When people buy some things they want just naturally gives them a feeling of satisfaction and perhaps a feeling of well being.

When promoting your product or service keep those things in mind about your target market. People may or may not need your product or service but if they are looking to find information on something then they are definitely searching for some reason. Your job here is try to give the consumer enough information and presented in a way to help that person justify their purchase.

Don't try to sell your product but instead talk about the benefits of your product. Will it help the customer improve their lifestyle. Will it help them save money or increase profits. Those are the things the reader is looking for. Talking about the features of your product or service are nice things to mention but more important is how those features will benefit the reader.

Research your target market and write about the things they want to know about. Visit forums and other places where people are asking questions about a service. Focus your message on those things. To help a customer justify their purchase try to paint a picture in a way to help the customer visualize what your product will do or help them.

What you want to accomplish in your promotions is to set yourself apart from the rest. If you are not providing the content and information the customer is searching far they will look elsewhere. You goal is to create a good impression to the reader and establish yourself as an expert in your niche. This will help them create confidence in you as the seller and help them justify buying from you.

An affiliate marketing business is not a business that can create wealth overnight. Persistence, drive, and determination will be key qualities you must have to build a successful internet business. Continue to do the research in your niche market and try various advertising strategies and techniques. Learning all the tricks of the trade will be an ongoing process and by using all the resources available will help make your affiliate marketing business successful.

Very true. Why would I want to purchase something that promotes itself in a generic bullet list which I can't apply to myself or see the benefit from?

Kevin, this article struck a chord with me for another reason also. I had a close friend who used the term wants and needs in reference to personal finance. He was old school. Paid his bills in cash. He did everything by cash. He said it was important to differentiate between wants and needs. It sounds so simple but works so well when applied

When you get down to the basic it does seem pretty simple...I think the older folks...(those older than me LOL) ..had more sense in some money maters. Many went through the depression and really understood how to spend their money wisely...I'm not nocking it but think our generation has been a little spoiled with so many things we think we just have to have....Really appreciate your comments John..

This is a good explanation of beneficial salesmanship. I believe one can be sold something you actually don't need by the correct approach and good product knowledge.

Thank you Kevin. Good sound advice. Pointing out the benefits, when they are in agreement with what the customer wants to hear, really works. If I think I need a new laptop, even though my laptop is working fine, it wouldn't take much convincing to convert me. Some of the reasons I think I need a new one is because the new one is faster, has more bandwidth (will save me time), has features I now don't have, has more gigabytes, looks cooler, thinner style. Lighter weight. If the presenter plays to all of those hot buttons, then I'll probably buy the laptop. Comes from knowing your customer and your product. Thank you for the very good article.
