Network Marketing Is Easy, Right?

Find any network marketing offer online or in your box and what you are made to believe is that it is not at all difficult to do and the commissions will rain down like hail from the sky. To buttress their point, some adverts even show dollars coming down in bucketfuls!

It is clear from people’s dissatisfaction with network marketing businesses, discontent with uplines and reluctance to build the business that we do a lot of disservice to the industry and ourselves when we unreservedly state...or even allude...to the fact that NWM is easy. As a matter of fact, it is not. Nor is any business....for that matter. Anyone who claims the contrary is not being truly sincere. I find that to be a shame.

In effect, NWM requires 3 main ingredients:

- time,

- effort, and

- yes - money.

Time is just a matter of redirecting your habits. Not easy but you can do it. Time directly impacts your efficiency. Effort can entirely be controlled by you....and directly impacts your effectiveness. Money is self limiting and directly affects both efficiency and effectiveness. You must find the best combination of the three that works for you. While nobody can specify that exact combination for you, some, (for example a good sponsor) can help you find it.

One way to succeed in MLM is to advertise your business. However the new mlmer faces a herculean task...and stiff competition...when it comes to advertising. Finding that “best combination” of time, effort, and money comes mainly from experience. Rarely does it just happen: education (taught and self-taught) plus mentoring (if available) are important factors and hopefully a fact of life. However, advertising is not impossible.

Simply put, advertising is just whatever method you use to “reach” people who may be interested in your offer. It might be through the traditional newspaper or ezine ad or the simple greeting and sharing with a friend. How you advertise or share can take many forms.

There are free and inexpensive methods that do work. It’s a matter of trying several to find the ones that best work for you.

Let’s look at some examples:

1. Writing and submitting ezine articles: This is an excellent means of advertising but it requires time and effort...but fortunately no money. The benefits include increased link popularity for the url used in your sig box (important for search engine ranking), branding, and reach (you can “reach” more people with an article than an ezine ad). Plus your article can go viral. This is because very often your article is archived by publishers and directories. So it is available well after it was originally published. Plus publishers and web masters will often “pick up” your article...again well after it was published. This particular article you are reading is an example and I’m offering it for publication in an ezine for traffic purposes.

2. Distributing Business cards: This is always a good method...and it is more inexpensive than you think. You can even make your own card on your computer. Then just pass them out like candy....stores, church, ball games, local events, restaurants (leave 1 with your bill), businesses you frequent, networking meetings, local Chamber Of Commerce, hotel lobbies, short, any place which pulls crowds. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination.

3. Flyers, posters, post cards, brochures, etc. Just like business cards, these can also be done very inexpensively. You can make your own on your PC or purchase custom or readymade templates from numerous online providers. You could even strike up a joint venture with a local community provider. They print it for you and include their advert somewhere...you distribute. This is a win-win situation, since you pay less and the provider gets free advertising. You can even influence that partner to be involved in your business.

4. Web decals on your vehicle(s) is another inexpensive method. I have one on each of our family cars (back window) with a short “catch line” and my url. Cost was ~ $40 each but the visibility is priceless.

5. Newspaper/magazine ads can be found that aren’t going to break your purse, budget or bank account. Local publications are a good place to start. nationwidenewspapers is an excellent source. For some of my services I've found College student newspapers and alumni magazines to be excellent performers.

These are just a few examples.

Of course there are the traditional ezine ads, leads programs, Forum participation (sig line - branding reputation), search engines, “3 foot rule”, blogging, giveaways, contests, etc. Most of these will cost you money...but all will cost you time and effort.

The key to being successful in NWM lies in being creative and sticking to what best fits your time, effort, and money combination when you find it. This is and should remain a personal choice. If the dollar “cost” doesn’t return the dollar “value” you hope for....keep looking. But don’t EVER give up. Should I say that again? Don’t EVER give up. That’s a defeatist’s attitude. Period.

Another thing is...diversify. Use multiple methods. Why limit yourself to just “one path” when you know that it is dangerous to keep all your eggs in one basket?

Should we just sponsor those willing to waste $1,000s advertising? Heck no!! We should sponsor anyone interested and teach them how to advertise in a manner best suited for their time, money, effort ratio. Don’t mislead them with false expectations or pressure them into uncomfortable egocentric actions. Lead them to solutions which best fit their expectations and abilities (time, effort, money).

John Milton Fogg’s answer to the question is priceless......”It is simple, but it isn’t easy.”

Wow! Captures it pretty well I’d say. In fact, he couldn’t have said it better. That’s the message. It’s not hard to understand...should/is fun.....but does take some effort.

Sending any message to prospects that denies effort is involved or necessary....misleads folks into becoming part of the “failed or quit” statistics of 97% of people who fail online.

Denial of effort leads to false expectations.

Prospects made to swallow such a blatant lie think they can lounge on the couch with a can of beer and potato chips watching Oprah on TV all day....and waiting for the money to roll in by itself like autumn winds blown by a storm.

Know that Lays, Coronas, and Dr. Phil aren’t going to build your business.

Only YOU are.

In my mind (OK...In my opinion)....that’s the core of any message prospects should receive.

If you really care about them (and of course, you should if you want to succeed)...the truth is what you’ll tell them.

Be honest and let people be realistic about MLM....
