It has been a year since I dipped my feet into the internet marketing ocean and I've learned a lot. If you are just starting out, here are some of the things I've learned, my tips for new Internet marketers.
1. Try not get discouraged. Cyberspace is vast and confusing, and there many ways of doing things. What has kept me motivated is that the online market is growing. It is wide open and full of opportunity. It represented to me a refreshing new start after years of working in crowded stagnant professions. Just yesterday, I read in The Wall Street Journal that E-commerce was one of the top high growth areas for the next decade.
2. Plan your work and work your plan. Don't dabble. Treat your online business as a job. It is easy to get overwhelmed, so try to set achievable short, medium and long-term objectives. That can include selecting the niche that you are going to work at, selecting the necessary tasks, even determining the budget.
3. Do not try to be a jack of all trades. Focus on your strengths. Some people are strong in graphics, others in the technical area, and other people are strong writers. I find it helpful to make friends with people who have complementary strengths to mine and we trade favors using our respective strengths. I've also learned that it is OK to pay and for certain products and services that will help me, such as a nice WordPress skin or back-linking. On the other hand, because I enjoy writing, I focus on that. Many Internet marketers have developed successful and rewarding businesses by doing what they enjoy to do.
4. Another tip for new internet marketers is to work with discipline. It is so easy to get distracted, especially if you are working at home. I have found that setting small goals for the day and sticking to them works well. I keep a whiteboard in my office and check them off when their done.
5. Learn how to avoid temptation. If you are one of these people who gets distracted with browsing, tell yourself that too much browsing wastes time and money. Once you're online and working to make money, you'll also be tempted with all kinds of attractive offers and promises. Practice due diligence. Ask yourself "do I really need this now" (the answers most of the time is no), and stay away from those offer that promise instant rewards.
6. Invest in your learning. I found that in my first year I had a particularly long learning curve. I had to learn about keywords, SEO, setting up blogs, websites, writing articles quickly, to name just a few things. Also consider joining in a membership site that has many resources and a good community that provides rich learning in Internet marketing and excellent support. These are just a of my tips for new Internet marketers based on what I've learned in the last year.
