Viral Marketing – What Is It And Why Is It So Exciting?

If I’d heard years ago that something had gone ‘viral’, I’d be worried. But now, ‘going viral’ is one of the best things that can happen to you online. You can go viral for all the wrong reasons too, of course, and there are plenty of horror stories out there that are terribly embarrassing. However, we will be focusing on the positive side of 'going viral'.

But what does ‘going viral’ actually mean? Basically, it means that like a virus spreading from person to person, your content is being spread all over the internet. The content could be anything – a blog post, an article, a video or a website. For a marketer, it means that you have created a message so powerful and exciting that people can’t wait to share it with their friends. As a result of the huge rise in popularity of social networking, it is simple to share your message with the world.

So what exactly is viral marketing? Marketers want to create interesting and fun content that makes people get excited and share it on the web to as many people as possible. Marketing companies are spending serious dollars to create flash games, funny videos and things that they think will appeal to internet users. If the content is picked up and shared through social networks, they succeed, if not, they don’t.

Viral marketing can be intentional, as described in the previous paragraph, or unintentional. For an example of unintentional viral marketing, have a look at the book “Go the F*ck to Sleep” by Adam Mansbach. The book was sent out in PDF form for review by email to many bloggers who enjoyed it so much that they all blogged about it, with examples from the book. The book is now Amazon’s number one best seller, its still on preorder, and they’ve brought the release date forward by four months and ordered an extra 150,000 copies for the first print.

As you can tell by that story, viral marketing can be incredibly profitable. When something ‘goes viral’, it is guaranteed to get huge amounts of views, clicks and purchases (if it’s a product). What’s more, if something ‘goes viral’ it is often reported on in websites, blogs, radio and television leading to even more exposure.

Viral marketing is a great strategy and a huge bonus to your campaign or brand. If it can take an unpublished book and turn it into a bestseller off of preorders, it is exciting to think of what it can do for you if you master it.
