Most people are under the impression that working at home rocks but is this the truth of the matter. For four years now I have been finding my feet online and gradually building an internet presence. It has been fun yes but is it all it's cracked up to be? In this article we will be looking at the reasons why working at home rocks - and why working at home sucks!
Working at home involves no additional costs - by this I mean the price of a days work. When I was working a nine to five I couldn't help but notice that I was getting through some money every day. Transport for one - whether it be car or public transport, both of them add up at the end of the week. Another pain was lunch! How many times have you been dragged out by work colleagues to a place you didn't want to eat? That's another $10 down the drain. So one of the main reasons why working at home rocks is the lack of additional costs.
Lets level the scales and find a downside here. Working at home is a pretty isolated experience. When working in an office I noticed many people gossiping for most of the day ( in most cases getting next to no work done ) and not stopping. I often wonder now if these people could ever cut it by working online - I doubt it. Working at home can be a lonely experience so you must be sure in yourself that you like your own company.
Back to why working at home rocks ( well in my book it does anyway! ). The most obvious point here is the convenience of it all. It is a lot more flexible than being stuck in a nine to five job. You are able to wake up when you want and even have a few late nights. But this is where a lot of people fail - to much enjoyment and not enough work will lead to failure and a return to the old office ( begging for your old job back! ).
Lets face it - about 99% of us would prefer to be our own boss. This is the main reason why working at home rocks and is such a popular idea. But the downsides are always overlooked. Simple things like health benefits, friendships and general social activity can all be sorely missed. At first I found separating my work from family life a real struggle - my son took my attention more often than not and I was losing many hours out of the day. Weigh up the pros and cons of working at home before you take the plunge - it could be an expensive mistake if you make the wrong choice.
