Find a job in today's market is hard, but here are some common mistakes that interviewees need to avoid.
1. Showing up late for your interview - Interviewers are looking for any hints about what type of employee you would be, so if you show up late for your interview, it is going to appear that you would also be late for work often. If you are unfamiliar with the job interview location, plan on going there a day ahead of time. Look for any unforseen obsticles that may delay you, such as school or construction zones. Plan on being at the location at least 15 minutes ahead of time, so you do not feel rushed.
2. Dressing inappropriately or sloppy- This is where the old adage that "you never get a second chance to make a good first impression"comes into play. As a rule of thumb, dress like the others do in that workplace. In an office setting, men should plan on wearing a coat and tie, and women should wear regular and suitable business attire. Dark colors like blue, black or gray are best, and go easy on the cologne and perfume. Jewelry should be kept at a minimum, and tatoos should be covered.
3. Bringing your cellphone in to your interview - There is nothing more distracting that being in the middle of an job interview and have someone call you. Leave your cellphone in the car when you go inside. Anyone who is trying to contact you can wait until your appointment is over.
4. Not doing your homework - Before the job interview, plan on doing some research on the company. Find out what type of business they are in, what is the company mission, and who the principal owners or officers are. Be able to relate your talents, experience, and training to the position you are interviewing for, and tell them how you can help the business.
5. Expressing personal opinions that may be inflamatory - The saying goes that everyone has their own opinion about everything, but a job interview is not the place to air them. Keep the discussion to the topic at hand, which is why the company should consider hiring you. If the interviewer does mention something that may be an opinion of theirs, simply be noncommittal. You do not want to discuss politics with someone who may not agree with your point of view.
Avoid these job interview mistakes, and good luck with your job search!
