Avoid Wearing Inappropriate Interview Clothing

Although it’s clear a lot of people make a lot of effort when dressing for an interview, I’ve conducted many interview over the years and I’ve often been surprised by the inappropriate interview clothes that some candidates are wearing. Obviously there are certain jobs where certain clothing may be accepted at interview which would be deemed appropriate in a different context (eg low cut tops) so you have to make up your own mind about what you believe to appropriate or inappropriate.

1. Very short skirts: Even if you have the most beautiful legs in the world, wearing a short skirt where you are in danger of revealing some of your underwear is unattractive and will make you look slutty.

2. See through tops: I don’t think see through is ever appropriate for interviews, because the interview may find it distracting, but obviously there are some fabrics that are much thinner than others.

3. Low cut tops: You may have a wonderful cleavage but you want interviewers to be concentrating on what you're saying not looking at your chest. Low cut tops can be very distrcting.

4. Ill fitting clothing: Badly fitting clothing is not a good look on anyone. Whether it’s because you’ve put on weight, lost weight or changed shape due to pregnancy, it’s important that your clothes fit you. Ill fitting clothing gives the impression unfairly or otherwise that you are sloppy and couldn’t be bothered.

5. Dirty or damaged clothing: - No need to say any more

6. Creased clothing: These days there’s no need to turn up in creased clothing as some many clothes are made of non crease fabrics. It never looks good when you can see when someone takes off their jacket that their shirt was new and has been put on straight from the packaging without ironing.

7. Night club/party clothing: Unless you interview is to work in a nightclub – you shouldn’t look as if your heading off to a party. You’d be surprised how often I’ve seen this.

8. Very high heels: Okay this only applies to the women. To those people who love high heeled shoes make sure that you don’t wear ones that are so high you can’t walk. Remember you may have to do a tour of a company and tottering about on high heels will make you look ridiculous.

9. Casual clothes: Don’t make the mistake of turning up in casual clothes if the interview dress code official or unofficial is very smart. You will make a very poor impression.

10. Work clothes: You may be going for an interview for manual work but it’s not appropriate to turn up in your work clothes. Remember it is an interview and you want to make a good impression.

You may have your own strong ideas of what should be worn at an interview but don’t ever spoil the first impression an interviewer has of you by wearing anything that could be interpreted as inappropriate. If you’re uncertain what you should wear or if you should be following a specific dress code– take advice.

Very timely advice! I think some people should read this before the venture forth to the supermarket too... lol. On a serious note, however, you're right that the first impression really does count!

Thanks Heather. It may sound a bit of a cliche, but I think people forget you only have one opportunity to make a first impression.
