Simple Tips for Interviews

Going for a job interview can be a nerve-wracking and stressful experience. However, people frequently make it more difficult for themselves by making easily avoidable mistakes. Here are some simple tips for interviews which if followed, should increase your chances of being the chosen candidate.

Be prepared: Make sure you read through your cv or job application and make sure that you have done sufficient research on the company and their business. Remember if you don’t know something, that you think you should – ring up and ask for it. You may be refused but at least you have tried. Don’t forget to take any information or certificates that you have been asked for.

Look good: Wear clothes that are appropriate for the organisation where your interview is. That doesn’t necessarily mean that if you have a manual job you wear overalls, or informal clothes if the organisation has a relaxed dress code. Again do some research if you’re not entirely sure what’s appropriate.

Arrive on time: Make sure that you always allow enough time to arrive on time. Not only will lateness not impress the interviewer/s, but you may miss hearing some important information, or find that you don’t have time to properly gather your thoughts before you’re called into the interview room.

Avoid saying too little or too much: Being monosyllabic will not impresses the interviewer. You need to take the opportunity to sell yourself. However, it’s also easy to damage your chances by talking too much, showing that you have poor listening skills

Avoid lying: It’s all too easy to be caught out in a lie and if you were the successful candidate you could later lose the job if you’re found out. Is it really worth embellishing your answers with qualifications you don’t have, jobs that weren’t at the level you say, with experience you don’t have. No it’s not. Be confident about the experience, skills and qualifications you do have.

Respond to questions clearly: Be succinct in your answers ensuring that you emphasis your unique selling point with examples to back up what you’re saying. But avoid being smug and acting as if you will be doing them a favour by going to work for them.

Don’t criticise former employers or former colleagues: This is a mistake that interviews often make. No company wants to employ someone who is happy to display disloyalty, someone who is a complainer or someone who clearly demonstrates they are not a team player.

Don’t give unnecessary personal information: Telling an interviewer all your troubles will not impress them and they will be concerned whether you would be able to concentrate on a job. They don’t want people with sob stories who are either expecting sympathy or could prove to be unreliable. Nor will they need details of how you spend your social life.

Don’t ask about salary: If you have queries about the salary or any additional benefits, then you can find out before or after the interview. You don’t want t give the impression that you’re only interested in the money

Ask some questions when asked: Even if you’re an internal candidate you need to ask questions when asked. If you don’t it will look as if you’re not that interested in the job.

Be aware of the words you use: It goes without saying that swearing is not acceptable, but nor will an interviewer be impressed by sloppy language or jokes. Also ensure that you are not over familiar even if it’s not the first time you’ve met the interviewer. Address them by their title and not their first name. Don’t be belligerent and argue with the interviewer, companies do not want to employ someone they see as a trouble-maker.

Don’t fidget: Clicking fingers, biting finger nails, picking at nail varnish or fiddling with hair, jewellery or glasses is distracting and annoying. It will particularly make a poor impression if the job involves dealing face to face with visitors, customers, clients or service users. And don’t under any circumstances chew gum.

Don’t relax too much: Maintain a professional stance at all time. Stretching out your legs or putting your hands behind your head are a no no.

Take back-up USB sticks: If you’re having to give a presentation, email it in time. If this is not possible, take at least two copies. Also take enough hard copies for the people watching a presentation.

There are no guarantees when you go for a job interview, but if you follow the tips above, you will certainly maximise your opportunities of success.
