My wedding and engagement ring were beautiful. But the prongs caught on everything. I had holes and catches in all my good scarves and sweaters. When the prongs caught they sometimes broke off. I would then have to get them put back on. After awhile this became a little expensive.

So I brought my wedding ring plus some other old gold and broken jewelry to my jeweler. I thought it would be very expensive to custom make my wedding and engagement ring over. I was quite wrong about that. Much to my happy surprise. If you bring in your old gold and diamonds, you may only have to add a small amount of new gold to the custom piece. That is the case with my ring.

I wanted a thicker yellow gold band with a half bezel for the main diamond. Although a half bezel makes the diamond look smaller, it stops the annoying catching that prongs can pull from clothes. I told the jeweler what I wanted and she showed me a wax model that was perfect. It was an experience see the ring formed from a purple wax replica to the new ring. The jewelers melted my old ring's gold down to form the new band and the diamonds from my engagement ring were saved to put in the newly melted band.

It took a few weeks for the ring to get through the process, but it was worth the wait. I love my new wedding ring as does my husband. My husband even helped me customize the new ring. Now, as my sister has said, I have the itch to make more custom jewelry. So I am gathering up more of my old gold and planning a new ring and necklace.

In the end I only paid $600.00 to get a whole new ring. It would have been $500.00, but I put two secret diamonds in my ring that I had to buy from the jeweler. Even my husband was quite happy with the price. I included a picture of my ring in the wax model I was shown first for my approval.

If you get the itch to make new jewelry from old, I can attest to the fact that you will love the new piece you create. There is nothing like making your own beautiful ring from your own old jewelry. It is new and old at the same time. The sentimental attachment you had for your old jewelry will still remain the same. It will just be brand new in a customized for you way.
