5 Common Job Hunting Mistakes

In the current economic climate, it’s a challenging time to be job hunting particularly when there are often a large number of candidates applying for each job, or in some areas there seem to be a limited number of suitable jobs that you can apply for. However, there are some common job hunting mistakes that are very easy to make but can easily be avoided.

1. Not knowing what you want

A common job hunting mistake is for people to say that they will ‘take anything’ and then not want to work overtime or travel a long way from home... Compile a list of things that really matter to you and then refer to this list when you’re job hunting. However, remember to be realistic.

2. Applying for jobs you’re not qualified for

If you don’t have the qualifications for a job – don’t waste your time applying. It can be dispiriting if you’re applying for a lot of jobs and you don’t even get shortlisted which is what will happen if you don’t have the right qualifications.

3. Using a scatter gun approach to job hunting

You may be absolutely desperate to get a new job – or a job – but applying for anything and everything is not a good use of your time and you'll receive a lot of rejections. Concentrate on applying for a few number of jobs that you’re really interested in, have the skills and experience for and take the time to do thorough research.

4. Expecting recruitment agencies to get a job for you

This is not a criticism of recruitment agencies. Whatever job vacancies they have – they want to fill, but they will only put you forward if they think you’re an ideal fit for the job. Good consultants will do a lot of hard work on your behalf to sell you to potential employers, but you shouldn’t just rely on them to get you a job – keep looking elsewhere yourself.

5. Only applying to large companies

It’s a common job hunting mistake to think that you’ll have more job security if you apply for jobs in a large well known organisations. You won’t. There are a lot of good SME’s (Small to Medium Enterprises) that have a good range of jobs and are good employers. Make sure that you don’t limit yourself.

Summary

These are just 5 of the common job hunting mistakes that you can easily make but clearly there are ore. Applying for jobs is time consuming and if you let it be, it can also be dispiriting so make sure that you have a focussed approach to your job hunting efforts, have a clear idea where you’re going to apply and put in the time and effort to make sure that your applications and CVs are specific to individual companies and of the highest quality.

Having not been in the job hunting market I found this really interesting. Your points seemed very sensible and I'm sure will be helpful to anyone seeking employment that has a good 'fit' for them.
