In this article we are going to discuss job searching and how to do this correctly, with focus, where to and how and when to take breaks.
It is all too easy for other people to say "Go get a job!" I have found that this statement is normally bound about by people who have been in their job since leaving school or people who unfortunately think that finding a job is oh so easy. I have been there and I know for a fact it is not. In truth I have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyper Disorder so I know how hard it is to set about this task and complete it with the minimum of fuss.
First of all decide in what area you would like to work. That is in case you have not worked in a specific area before. With all the websites and employment agencies around you are hard pressed into making a decision in where to go and in fact many people take the shotgun approach and send their Curriculum Vitae's here, there and everywhere. This in my opinion is not going to help you or cut your time down. For example when doing this approach you have too remember where you have applied, which companies you have applied to and even perhaps slightly change your C.V. each time. This of course is time consuming.
The way to cut down this time consuming exercise is to narrow down your employment agencies or companies that you are applying for. There are many employment agencies that are only after one thing and that is to make money from what ever companies they can talk into getting on board with them. Rather than those employment agencies go for the employment agencies that are within your target niche. If say you are a builder then target the builder employment agencies the same for catering etc etc. With a niche employment agency there stands a much higher chance of them being honest with you and finding quality companies to work for. After all you do not want to find a job then start all over again because the company is bad.
The same can be said for websites that offer to find employment for you. Yes they will have thousands upon thousands of jobs for you to choose from. Though with those thousands of jobs for you to choose from there of course will be thousands of people chasing that one job as well. With a niche employment website once again the jobs will be much more streamlined to your experience and not so many people applying for those positions.
We should also take into account that looking for work is a job in itself. You would not do it for leisure I am sure? With this said make sure that you take breaks regularly during the day like you would whilst employed. Break the day up into chunks for example in the mornings you could phone agencies, in the afternoon you could apply online. I am sure you know at what times of the day you are best and so therefore adopt those times to your job searching efforts.
In this article we covered how to search for a job effectively. We looked at how to save time rather than taking the shot gun approach we should approach niche employment agencies that have more streamlined jobs for you and with fewer applicants. Lastly we looked at how looking for a job is a job in itself and how you should take breaks throughout the day to achieve the best results.
Once again thanks for reading and any questions fire away. All the best Jason.
Well said, JP. To outline what you've stated, there are 4 critical activities that must be carried out by all job seekers to make effective use of their time. 1. Determine the geographic area in which you wish to work. I recommend a zip code finder for all those towns within your commutable radius. 2. Determine the industry in which you believe you can bring the most value. Industries at a Glance is an excellent resource for this research. 3. List all the companies within your chosen industry or industries that are located within your commutable distance. 4. Contact all these companies to determine who would have the authority to hire or supervise a person with your skills, and contact them directly.
