How To Write A Cover Letter: Health Care Management

The problem you are trying to solve is not just how to write a cover letter, but how to write one for a health care management position. A common mistake people make is writing one generic cover letter for every job they apply for. All they change is the name of the company and the job title and they think they are done. Not so fast. Given the economy, it’s a buyers’ market when it comes to hiring. You don’t need me to tell you that competition for jobs, especially in management, is fierce, and the health care industry is no exception. If you want to get job interviews, then you need to know how to write a cover letter tailored for that health care management job you’re trying to get.

So let’s say the job posting starts with some sentence like “bring your expertise to our innovative, performance driven culture.” So think about all that you have accomplished in your career. What did you do that was innovative and got results? Did you ever come up with a new idea that improved performance?

A good example would be “I developed a plan to reconfigure job assignments among the housekeeping staff who worked in the OR and was able to reduce staffing by two full time positions.” Notice how that sentence gives a specific, quantified result. This is much stronger than “when I was the OR supervisor I managed the department staffing.” Worse would be “I managed the OR for five years.” Which one demonstrates a tangible result? The person who knows how to write a cover letter like that will be the one to get the job interview. So read every word in the job posting carefully. Look for what is most important to the employer. (Here’s a hint: if they repeat something or say basically the same thing in different ways in two places, then it’s probably important to them.)

When figuring out how to write a cover letter for a management position in health care, remember what the management function is all about: getting results. So pick some examples from your experience that show the results you got that are in the areas that are important to the company you are applying to.

Some example might be that you managed a $200,000 budget for 5 years and consistently had actual expenses less than planned, or that you led your team to implement a new service delivery model. After you’ve listed one or two specific examples, you could then list a few functions that you performed, such as strategic planning or establishing and maintaining productivity targets, listing items that were mentioned in the job posting.

If certain credentials, such as an RN license are mentioned, by all means include that you meet these requirements. A little trick used by those who know how to write a cover letter is that you always use the same wording as used in the job positing. So if the posting says “registered occupational therapist” don’t say “I have my OTR.” The reason for this is many organizations scan job applications and let the computer search for key words. The computer might not know that OTR is the same as “registered occupational therapist.” You don’t want to be eliminated from consideration by a computer!

By taking the time to learn how to write a cover letter for a health care management position, you’ll increase your chances for getting called for an interview, and potentially getting the job you want.
