It's that Time again! We're getting ready to go Back to School! I can honestly testify that I will have 3 of my children going back to school. Well, actually 2. One of them is starting out his first year in Kindergarten. How Exciting!
So, I thought I'd write some things to help you parents out so you don't feel left out in the cold--so to speak. If I had forgotten something, please let me know in the spaces below, I really appreciate your feedback!
- Register. Register your child, and early if at all possible. That's one thing that you don't want to not have done. You can get all their supplies, but they need to be registered in the school of your district, or choice that is. Please make effort to make this a top priority.
Note: Some schools may have different rules, waiting lists, or regulations before you enter your child into a different area where you are living. Look into this ahead of time. If it's possible, to find out who their teacher will be. Sometimes you have this luxury, and sometimes you have to wait until the first day of school. I had both. But, if I'm given a choice to find out ahead of time--that's the better way to do it.
2. Doctor Appointments. Make sure that all of the eye appointments have been scheduled, made, and have all the information from the doctors/optometrists for their visual information. Nothing worse in having your kids can't even see the chalk or digital board.
- Shots. Yes, I know your kids won't like me for this one. But it is very important for you to have your children immunized and all of their shots taken care of. Some are only once every five years. But it surely doesn't hurt to have them double checked beforehand.
Routine. Oh, yes, they've been up late every day since summer, but now it's time to buckle down and get to bed early. You can easily move him/her into this by starting 2-3 weeks before school starts. Have them go to bed 1/2 hour earlier, and get up a 1/2 hour earlier than before. You can slowly adjust their times as needed.
When the first day comes, it won't be a major shock to them when they have to get up 1-2 hours earlier than they did before. Plus, even more important, you don't want to be late on the first day--at least not where I live. We have higher standards here than other places, and don't give you much room for slacking off/being late. That's good for the kids, though.
Shopping! Yay! Aren't we having fun yet?! Because each school has different lists, make sure that you're given a paper list, or a list emailed to you so you know exactly what is needed for their first day of school. It's embarrassing to the children to not have all of their supplies on their first day. Double check their back-packs, they may need to be replaced if their are a lot of holes in them. And, sometimes schools may actually sell the supplies cheaper than you can get online, or from your local retailer big stores.
First Day of School! On the first day, it's important to walk with your child (unless their High School, they are most likely able to take care of it on their own). This is especially important if they're going to a new school district, a new school, or some major change has happened in their life.
Security is very important to a child, to know that their mom or dad, or other guardian is there to help them, if needed, along the way. And in that time, if at all possible, meet with the new teacher, and give your information to her, and get her information so you know what to do in case of emergencies, or need to leave notes to, etc.
Of course, don't be afraid to ask the teachers questions, that's what they're there for. And, of course, your child will blend in just fine, and you will be reassured that everything will go well.
- Last Note: Make sure that you have all the bus schedules inline, and know exactly where your child will have to go, what time the bus will come, and what to expect. My children actually walk, because it's a short distance. But unless you drive them, or they walk or ride their bike, make sure you know ahead of time those details to make the first day's transaction go smoothly. And, when your child comes home from school, ask them if they know when their pictures will be taken place.--Granted some schools actually have them done beforehand.
It's going to be great! Please share your thoughts below!
Good and interesting article. Makes me realise how different all countries work. I have 2 children and 3 bonus children = 5 is a lovely number :). The oldest is about to turn 11 and the youngest 6. Here in Sweden we only need to register our kids once and that we do when their in childcare, (unless your moving then you need to register them to the new school). The school takes care of all shots they need. We have no lists the school provides all the material that they need. Security back and forth to shool is the parents responsibility as should be. I realy enjoyed your article and learnt a lot, thank you
Boy am I glad to be out of school lol. No more getting detentions for being late.
