Computer Technology In the Classroom - Computer Tutors

As a Senior Citizen I feel like I need to go back to Kindergarten. Even 3 year olds can out do those from my era. Wow, how school has changed! Why? It's called computer technology.

I remember when a computer took up a huge room - maybe, half the building it was in. Only certain people were allowed into that room. The one I remember had glass on one wall so we could get a peek. I remember these huge reels going round and round. It was intimidating to say the least.

Today, you can find them in every school and every classroom has access to them as part of the curriculum. They now fit on desk tops, behind the ear or even in the ear as hearing aids, they are in our phones, fit in our purses and I could go on and on. I'm thinking, a personal computer tutor might help. Well, we have personal trainers so why not personal computer tutors! Maybe I can find one in the kindergarten class as I'm sure they are now qualified. Students are now tutoring other students.

Teachers no longer have to stand all day in front of the class drilling boring information into their students little brains. Yes, the computer can now qualify as a teacher. Teachers have gone from being the center of attention to being more like a coach and a facilitator. They are no longer in an active role but a passive one.

Students, on the other hand have become the active ones as the search out information for themselves. Of course their "coach" is still there ready to give guidance when needed, to motivate the student to set goals, to provide resources and to give suggestions.

Are we to worry the student isn't being stimulated to think for themselves? No way! They are just being challenged in the "Brave New Computer World" way.

Some of the positive effects on students are that they become eager to share knowledge with their peers, their motivation is increased, they gain a sense of accomplishment, they get immediate results and therefore, their self esteem is enhanced. With their impressive level of skills they feel empowered. They know in many situations, more than their parents and for sure they have greatly surpassed their grandparents.

Another positive effect is that they are able to handle more complex assignments. They have the inclination to work cooperatively with others. Group assignments foster collaboration. They instinctively want to help those who are struggling and end up tutoring their peers.

So what can we glean out of this new way of learning in our schools? We can always find a computor tutor. They are your grandchildren, your neighbor's children, your own children and of coarse you can always find one online.
