Great Schools, Education, And The Lottery System

It is an undisputable fact that all children have the right to quality education by attending a good school. However, with the continuous budget cuts to education, the public school system continues to face challenges such as teacher layoffs, increasing class size, reducing services (such as tutoring and extracurricular), and more. With this type of ongoing challenges, it is difficult to focus on the bottom line, providing quality education to the students because teachers worry if they will still have a job the next day while principles are wondering if the school will be open next school year.

Interestingly, while our educational resources are depleting, education continues to be emphasized as the core and focus for our children and young adults. We often see and hear that with a good education, it implies more career opportunities, higher earnings, therefore a “better life” and “better future”. More than ever, with the current condition of our economy and record high unemployment rates, education is emphasized more than ever, to encourage people to embrace and learn.

With these two conflicting events occurring simultaneously, cutting education while emphasizing the significance of education, we are seeing more demands for good public schools, so that our younger generation can have a brighter future. Unfortunately, there is a shortage of good public schools; hence, children are on a long waitlist, or even worst, their chance to have a brighter future rests on luck, the lottery system. I have heard about (and unfortunately witnessed) one too many occurrences where a child’s number did not get called, and therefore is denied the opportunity to attend a good school. This system can often be known about to a parent but rarely is it spoken of.

It is quite nebulous how our education system is being painted. Yes, it should be at the center of our younger generation, but no, we’re not providing them all access to good education, or a good school.

Should the fate of our children’s future be based on the luck of a draw? Why does the lottery system exist, and how can it exist? Why do other countries provide quality education, while refraining from taking from education to compensate for their own economic setbacks and manage to find another way? This is a topic that is personal and dear to me. I finally decided to research and write about this topic, to share my thoughts after watching a recent documentary titled Waiting for “ Superman” that empowered me. This film touches on several aspects of the U.S. education as well as other countries in comparison.
