Things That Teachers Would Love to Tell Parents: How to Have A Good School Year

The ongoing and very highly publicized teacher's strike in Chicago has teachers across the nation in the cross hairs. On one side, there are supporters who think that no matter what they want, the teachers are not getting enough of anything. On the other side, are the detractors who are convinced that teachers have it super "easy", that they only work a few hours a day, in a safe classroom and have the whole summer off. But that is not the reality for the majority of the teachers in the United States, the teachers who are trying hard to educate the youth that is supposed to represent the future of this nation but are continually and frustratingly falling farther and farther behind. After speaking to several teachers, some of the things that they want parents to know are stunningly similar. Here are just a few of those things.

First, remember that even though the school day is only seven to eight hours long, the teacher's day is much longer. They often come in early to set up lessons and other equipment in the classroom. After the day has "ended" they are grading papers. If you need to speak to your child's teacher, make sure that you are allowing them time to return your call or email and remember that they also have a family of their own that they want to spend time with. If the call can wait, then please do so until school hours.

Second, remember that your child is an individual but a member of a larger group. Some classrooms are filled to capacity and beyond. Most teaches will give assignments, explain the lesson and then ask if there are any questions. If your child is struggling, it is important to work as a team to figure out how to best help him. But, remember, if he sits there silently and waits to panic at nine pm about his homework, there is more than just not getting the assignment to deal with, here.

Teachers want their students' parents to understand that they know that you are busy and have other obligations but they also ask that you understand that about them as well. Teacher's meetings and conferences are necessary, not just for the troubled students but for those who are doing very well, also.Teachers want the best for your child- even if they are working with huge budget cuts and a glaring lack of basic items in their classroom. They want you to know that they are trying but need your support.

Great article Amie! My husband has been a teacher for the past 17 years in NY. The changes they have made in rating teacher performance makes it increasingly difficult to teach the way he knows a student will learn. (He teaches juniors and seniors). The fact that some parents also expect you to deal with their "entitled child" and heed to their demands...thats another article LOL!

My friend Terri suggested that same article too!!!! She is a 9th grade science teacher and has had a parent show up at her house during a birthday party, demanding to know why the kid tanked a test!
