Most people facing a kitchen cabinet refacing activity have a serious problem picking the colors that they want to paint their cabinets with. Now, I should note that not all refacing projects require the use of paint, as some people simply replace the entire front facing along with the cabinet doors. This is normally done professionally. My cabinet refacing topics are based on homeowners getting down and dirty with painting.
What Color Is Right?
While I can’t tell you which colors to choose (because you have your own preferences and opinions) I can give you some design guidance about how to match and mix the colors. When you go out to look for interior paint color ideas for the cabinets, be sure to have an open mind. Some people only have the intention on buying a color that is very light and miss out on all that the darker, richer colors have to offer. So, let’s talk about how to match colors.
Simple Rule for Walls and Cabinets
Light walls look best with darker cabinets. Darker cabinets look better with lighter walls. That’s the basic, simple rule. Now, I know most of you did not read all the way down here just to hear that, so let me elaborate a bit. Dark colors on the walls tend to give the room a closed in, smaller look. If you pair that with dark cabinets, you will have a room that looks small, closed in and depressing. There are some ways to get around this if you must have everything dark. Try using light colors on the floors. Dark wood cabinets with light colored wood (laminate) floors look great together. And to go a step further, add glass tiles to the backsplash with hints of both the colors from the cabinets and floor. This is very important when considering interior paint color ideas for your cabinets and trying to tie all the colors together.
Consider the Countertops
Another thing you need to take into consideration before picking the colors for the kitchen cabinet refacing are the countertops. You want to try to stick with colors that mix well with them, especially if you plan to keep them. Lighter counters match up will with dark to medium colored cabinets. Darker counters match well with medium to light cabinets.
Play It Safe
If you still need help with interior paint color ideas for the cabinets, play it safe and stain the cabinets in a medium tint. This color works well for resale and can be matched with a variety of countertops, and floors. Also, there are a several different kitchen accessories that can be paired with a kitchen containing mainly neutral colors.
Taking on a project like kitchen cabinet refacing does not have to be hard. With a little preparation and inspiration, your kitchen will look like you hired a professional contractor to do the job! You will potentially save thousands of dollars, and have a bit of experience under your belt.
The color of the cabinets can be whatever you want, as long as you know how to tie the accessories together to make the design work.

lol .. This I like. All I could do is make a mess, instead of really hurting myself. I like to think I am very Bob Villa like, but I am actually closer to Tim Taylor :)
Tonya, Great ideas. Good job on the article and the matching photo that grabs attention. My dad built the home I grew up in and the family still lives in now. Brick by brick, and all that. My maternal grandfather was an electrician, so he's the one who wired the house. I was blessed growing up with getting my own room as well as being able to choose paint colors and apply them. Not that I was very good at it! But I got to choose. And I learned a lot by helping with various continuous-building-projects. Thanks for triggering good memories and realizations of blessings! blessings, Cynthia
Just got the kitchen redone last year. You're right about the colors. I used to have the walls and floor dark with light cabinets. When it got changed up it was the black work tops with the cherry cabinets. The walls are now papered with a white and silver tiled kitchen paper. With a light laminated effect vinyl. The difference it makes to how the size is perceived just by the colors is amazing.
