It can be difficult to know the best way of creating a garden that is good for the environment. If you want some handy tips and ideas to make your garden more environmentally friendly and sustainable then have a look at this helpful short guide to sustainable gardening.

• Don’t be afraid to try out different approaches to gardening. Practises such as Xeriscaping are worth considering especially in the face of the current water shortage. Mainly used in much dryer parts of the world these kinds of gardening ideas are worth considering as they can help you to create a garden that is very stylish and low maintenance as well as using very little excess water.

• The main elements of Xeriscaping are using plants that are native to your area therefore are more likely to need a great amount of care and water. It also encourages the incorporation of other materials such as rock and wood, to fill up space in such a way that requires very minimal maintenance and water.

• Start thinking about the materials you are using and where they came from. It’s a really good idea to shop around for materials for garden structures that are recycled. A great example of this is to use old railway sleepers. . Using wooden sleepers is a great way to recycle wood and it also gives the garden a great rustic look. They can be used to create a whole range of structures, such as raised flower beds, patio furniture and sandpits and they make great garden dividers. They are also incredibly durable and will last as long as you need them for without needing further treatment.

• Another innovative use of recycled materials has come about recently in the form of rubber mulch made from shredded tyres. Unlike mulch made from bark the rubber does not break down and disappear into the soil. It also does not hold onto vital rainwater which is an extremely important consideration at the moment. It also has the added benefit of acting as an excellent frost protector in winter and a temperature stabiliser in the summer.

• Try to create a friendly little ecosystem in your garden. A great way of helping the environment is to turn your garden into a space that will help to grow and maintain healthy natural ecosystems. This may sound like a daunting task but in actual fact it is simpler than you may think. Firstly, instead of limiting yourself to just a few plants, try instead growing a wide range of fruits and vegetables as well as ornamental plants.

• Replacing a grass lawn with native wild flowers, bushes and trees will help to provide food shelter and cover that will encourage life to flourish.

So there are many ways to create an environmentally friendly garden that suits your style and taste. Many of these approaches are simple to achieve and are not going to break the bank.
