This article will cover the wooden pergola. There are several types of pergolas to choose from when you do indeed make the decision to have one built for your home. The type of pergola is very important as it can either make or break your outdoor space as a good design. Also you wan to ensure that the design of your pergola compliments the architecture and design of your home. There are wooden, fiberglass, vinyl, and metal pergolas. All of which are viable options for your backyard pergola.
The first and most classic of pergolas is the wooden pergola. These pergolas are the most used and probably the oldest type used as the backyard pergola. They go well with most homes and since they have been around for a while they come in an array of sizes shapes and designs. Because it is easy to cut and design wood some of the more decorative and unique pergolas will be wood. With a wood pergola it is a lot easier to customize as well. You can train vines to grow up them and easily (with a staple gun or nails) attach drapes or an outdoor curtain to it. With a wooden backyard pergola the customizations are out of this world in terms of the possibilities and its the main pergola type that you can have built or can design for yourself. While you can also somewhat customize the size and shape of non-wood pergolas the wooden pergola is the type you can have hand carved and designed specifically to you desires for the least amount of dollars.
After deciding what the structure will look like you must decide what to attach to it for added comfort as there are many options available to you. You could simply attach drapes or curtains in the directly to the wood or go the traditional way and install curtain rods of some sort to pull them back when you want. I cannot stress enough the the type of fabric used here must be one that will do well in the outdoors. And yes they do make outdoor curtains! Also you could attach an automated cover to the top that closes at the push of a button to allow sun when you want it and shade when you don't.
These options are better in terms of customizability than vines. While training vines to go up your wooden backyard pergola is a great, beautiful, possibly fragrant, and all natural way to add shade you are stuck with it. The only way to reduce the shade once added is to cut the vines.
Whatever you choose make sure yo keep your outdoor space usable, comfortable, and beautiful and you and your family will continue to enjoy it all summer long.
Loved reading this! My husband and I have been planning to build one of these for the longest! Do you have a website? I would love to connect with you. Perhaps we could do some guest blogging on each others sites :) Cheers
