Have you ever studied a foreign language? Many colleges require that students take a foreign language as part of their degree program. Learning a foreign language helps people to communicate with those from other parts of the world. It also prepares people for the workforce.
After many years of studying a foreign language, it is possible to become fluent in the language. Being fluent in a foreign language opens doors to many jobs. A person might work at Walt Disney World, for instance. His foreign language skills would enable him to communicate with guests at the Florida theme park. He would be able to tell people where various attractions, such as the Tower of Terror, are located. He could also tell people about the day's upcoming events, such as the parade that happens on Main Street, U.S.A. every afternoon at 2:00 and the Main Street Electrical Parade, which happens at night. A person who is fluent in a foreign language might wait tables at a restaurant, telling the restaurant's guests about the daily specials. He could also work as a tutor, tutoring students in the foreign language. He could help the students learn effective ways of studying the language, such as using a tape recorder, making flash cards, and speaking in the language as often as possible.
When it comes to filling out job applications, a person who knows a foreign language has an advantage over a person who does not. A person who knows a foreign language may earn more money and have more opportunities at work than a person who does not know a foreign language. People who know a foreign language can work at many places, such as grocery stores, libraries, and cruise lines. All of these places cater to different people, many of whom may not have English as their primary language.
When mentioning foreign language skills on a job application, the applicant should be very careful to indicate how much training he has had. If he has had two years' training in a language, for example, he should indicate that on his application. That way, his prospective employer knows that he does have some experience in the language, but he is not fluent. An applicant should not say that he is fluent in a language if he is not fluent. He would be lying, which could cause him to be terminated. If he is in fact fluent, however, he has the potential for a long and successful career.
