Is it Funny Or Annoying to Have An Accent?

There are several factors to be considered in order to have an effective communication and to be able to successfully break down language barriers. It may be more easy to some, and a bit difficult and annoying to others.

Nowadays, we all know that the English language is very commonly spoken, and in fact one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, and thus, over the years there are significant numbers of people trying to improve and enhance their English speaking skills. You can find English speakers anywhere in the world, and thus, there are different English accents too. Normally, speakers of other languages speak English with their own language accents, and it is quite acceptable, however, it may definitely affect the entire communication settings between people that have different accents.

Word stress, sentence stress, intonation, pronunciation, and word linking all influence the sound of spoken English. English pronunciation involves too many complexities for learners who struggle in eliminating accents; however, improving pronunciation will boost your self-esteem, and facilitate a good and interactive communication.

Speakers of some languages seem to have really strong accents; I guess, the list will be quite long if I was to list them. So, I will just choose my own native language as an example. Filipino or Tagalog is one of the official languages of the Philippines aside from English; however, because of the thick and strong accent of Filipinos, some foreigners are struggling to understand the English accents of the locals.

Sometimes my foreign friends are making fun of my Filipino accent; I am not sure if my accent sounds annoying or cute to them. The Filipino accent has certain similarities to the Spanish accent, largely due to the Spanish influence in the Philippines. Although there are similarities, there are distinct differences as well.

Two of the most confusing sounds for some Filipinos are the ‘’f’’ and ‘’p’’ sounds. Both sounds are formed completely differently in the English sounds, and because they is distinct, mispronouncing these sounds will noticeably affect your accent. So, the word ‘’fork’’, when spoken by Filipinos, will sound just like ‘’pork’’, and thus, it will be a bit confusing to some foreigners, most especially to English native speakers.

Another English vowel sound that both Spanish and Filipinos have trouble pronouncing is the /iy/ sound as in the word ‘’sheep’’. Oftentimes, both of these groups are confuse this sound with the /i/ vowel sound as in the word ‘’ship’’.

In addition, some Filipinos and Spanish speakers have trouble pronouncing the sound ‘’t’’, and pronounce it more like ‘’ch’’, so the word ‘’Tuesday’’ become ‘’Chooseday’’. These significant differences can be understood by everybody, but they may nonetheless lead to confusion.

Factors like the wrong emphasis on syllables or improper pronunciation of sounds often occur in languages, especially when spoken by non-native speakers. Although, every language has different accents, and accents are one of the trademarks of your identity and culture, it is still important that proper pronouncing of vowel sounds of words should not be taken for granted. Learning an accent or accent reduction may be unnecessary but it can be helpful for communication, and learning languages and accents are really just a matter of learning and training!
