Online Norwegian language courses

When you want to learn Norwegian, online Norwegian language courses might be a good option. Online language classes offer more time on task than most traditional language teaching methods in a physical classroom. For native English speakers the following table shows the expected average time a student has to spend to learn different languages.

The higher the category the more different and difficult the language is considered, and hence the more time the average student will need to learn the language. Norwegian is a Category 1 language and is considered one of the easiest languages to learn for an English speaking person. As the table above show 500 hours should be enough for most people to reach Low Advanced level or even Mid Advanced level for most students. This will be sufficient in most situations including working and studying at College or University level here in Norway.

So how does technology help you learn a foreign language like Norwegian? In several ways actually, you can listen to the language while doing other things or traveling from one place to the other. This helps you get acquainted to the sound of the language and you´ll pick up words and phrases that you did not know from before. You can use flash cards, that help you learn new vocabulary and these days there are several apps that makes it really easy to make your own flashcards on your phone. Very often in a classroom situation you only got one teacher teaching you the language, and that won´t prepare you for all the different dialects that you´ll meet in Norwegian. Actually there are more than 400 Norwegian dialects. Video examples from different parts of Norway will help the student to grasp some of the differences and still be able to understand the meaning of it. That said all Norwegians are used to hearing different dialects so if the student learn common dialects like the ones spoken in the Oslo area, then everybody will be able to understand them.

When learning a language the ability to put the words into a context is essential for remembering them. Just reading a text and repeat the vocabulary time after time is not the most efficient way of learning a language. You need a social setting where the language is used in its natural context to fully grasp it. This is where the use of video and audio can improve the language acquisition immensely. And through online social programs we share real experiences and information in real time that understands what we communicate and together we create an experience. Experiences are great for learning languages and understanding other cultures.

Putting up a blog and letting the students contribute in the language they are learning adding videos and comments is a good way of using the language in a common context of the 21st century. For online classes it might be a good idea to let the student collaborate on a document together using Google Docs. This allows the students to work together in real-time even when they´re not in the same place. It is also a way to make the students more active in their own learning process. Most people learning Norwegian or any other language for that matter need an extra push to use the language in a setting with other people. Collaboration online with a document that all are responsible for is a great way to achieve just that.
