There is an enjoyable way for learning a foreign language and it is easy achievable if you are really passionate about it and you afford to invest some time and effort into it. A well-chosen foreign language can open a lot of opportunities ahead of you. In this article I am going to discuss the best approach in learning a foreign language.
It requires motivation
Every time you start to learn a new thing you do it motivated by something or someone. This is no different for learning a foreign language. You need to think what is that made you considering learning it in the first place. Whether your motivation is the business, career opportunities, moving to another country, travel, study, interest in other cultures or just passion for new languages, you have to constantly remember what triggered it. Thought might be challenging and fun, learning a foreign language is not always easy, and cannot be learned overnight, but if you use your motivation and follow your plan, you will surely achieve your goals.
What language to chose
Well, you should choose language according to your motivation. For example, I have recently moved to another country and even if I can communicate in English with some of the local people I don't feel it is enough for me. So I started to learn their language. What was actually my motivation ? Well, I want to better integrate in their community, to be able to understand what people are talking on the street, to find a job easier and to understand what my baby and his friends will talk when they grow older. These are some of my motivations, so as you can see I have more than one and they keep me on the right track.
What method should I use
There are a lot of methods you can use these days, starting with payed one-on-one or group classes, if you have the time and money, and continuing with learning books or programs, and, the easiest method, free or payed e-learning. I actually use a payed program which came with three CDs and a free e-learning website in parallel. I also try to watch movies and TV channels in the local language and luckily for me some channels have subtitles so I can hear the movie in English and read how they interpret it. I feel better when learning for more sources, you have a vast list from where to choose so study them and see which method fits you better.
Start learning
Now that you have your motivation, you know what foreign language you want to learn and what method fits your learning style you only need a plan to stick with and start learning. You need to study and interact with the language you are learning as much as possible. You can do this by listening to radio or watching TV in the target language, you can also try to read newspapers, books or participate in discussion forums, and these are just a few examples. If you are just starting learning a foreign language, you should aim for at least half an hour a day.
Learning a foreign language is not just about adding to your knowledge, it is also about all the advantages it brings to you in terms of business, career and life. I hope this article has helped you out.
