Sign Language Interpreting Helps Deaf Communities

When we think of communication, we quickly realize how essential it is in our daily lives. People who are deaf or are hard or hearing need a language interpreter to bridge the gap of communication and to make sure that understanding is provided during a conversation.

It is true that humans learn how to use sign languages at a very early age. Babies as young as seven months use sign language in communicating or expressing their wants and needs. When your baby raises her or his hands, this is simply a request to pick them up. Thus, this gesture enables a baby to communicate a need or idea.

On the other hand, the deaf community are clearly different from babies. Babies can gain a lot of attention from their parents, and this is because parents serve as the personal interpreters of the baby. Deaf people need to be treated equally in the society as well, from education to politics and thus to communication.

Deaf persons, by necessity, need a sign language interpreter when engaging in medical, legal, educational, and other important situations. This is to ensure that people understand each other; however, requiring an interpreter is not always easy and can sometimes lead to some misconceptions. Thus, in hiring a sign language interpreter, does it matter that he or she is a native speaker of the source language? What are the factors that can cause a sign language interpreting assignment to end in failure?

Sign language interpreting is tricky process of communication. There are plenty of things that an interpreter should consider during the interpreting process such as the facial expressions, attitude, choice of words, nuances and other body language expressions.

One of the most common examples in hiring a sign language interpreter is during class sessions. In an educational classroom setting, it is important the interpreter understands the main point of the instructor in order to properly convey the important message and knowledge to the deaf students. Hence, it is important that a sign language interpreter should not only be proficient in the source language or be knowledgeable in conveying the hand and other body languages of the deaf students, but an interpreter should also hold a specialist certificate to ensure that deaf students can be properly aided in their learning in any educational levels.

Through sign language interpreting services, the world is just opening up a new world and good opportunities for deaf people to participate fully in society. In addition, some medical service providers fail to provide qualified sign language interpreters to their deaf and hard-of-hearing patients; and if this happens, it only shows that they discriminate against the rights and well-being of hearing impaired people.

When it comes to communication, it should be noted that understanding and knowledge should not be neglected. Just like people with perfect heraing, the deaf community should be treated equally and thus, using a qualified sign language interpreter or seeking help from translation or interpreting service providers is a good way to ensure that both the deaf community and hearing people can benefit from the positive outcome of effective communication.
